Spring Semester 2009 in Vienna

I always had an interest in international relations and knew I wanted to study abroad as an undergraduate.  Having begun German instruction at Illinois, I thought the IiVP presented the perfect opportunity to improve my German skills, while living in a world-class diplomatic center. It certainly did!

The courses I took in Vienna allowed me to combine my interests in German with my wider career aspirations. The program also provided many fun social events to ensure that everyone made the most of their time in Austria. My favourite was the annual Talent Show hosted by the Program Director. I also fell in love with Vienna and life in Europe. Consequently, I experienced everything I could in the Austrian capital, travelled, made friends, and had an amazing time along the way.

While participating in the Civic Leadership Program the following year, I strove to return to Europe and Vienna, accepting an internship at the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in 2010. After graduating in 2011, I returned again to work at the IAEA as Junior Professional Officer and remained until 2016. I now live in the UK, where I work for the Civil Service on Brexit issues like the UK's exit from the European Atomic Energy Community and World Trade Organisation negotiation strategy. I continue to use my German whenever I can and regularly return to Vienna to visit friends.

My study abroad experience provided me with the kowledge and confidence to pursue a career in international governance.  It was not only one of the most memorable of my college experiences, it has played a major role in shaping my future. I highly recommend the IiVP!
