Born to a rich pagan family, Jerome led a wild and misspent youth. Studied in Rome, Italy, and became a lawyer. He converted and joined the Church in theory, and was baptised in 365, but it was only when he began his study of theology that he had a true conversion and the faith became integral to his life.

Today we honor St. Jerome, priest, monk, Doctor of the Church. Renowned for his translations of the Bible into Latin in the Vulgate; he's also the patron of people with difficult personalities.
Hoy se celebra a San Jerónimo, fue el encargado de traducir de la Biblia del hebreo al latín y Doctor de la Iglesia. La Iglesia Católica ha reconocido siempre a San Jerónimo como un hombre elegido por Dios para explicar y hacer entender mejor la Santa Biblia.

Jerónimo quiere decir: el que tiene un nombre sagrado.
San Jerónimo fue un Padre de la Iglesia Occidental que dedicó toda su vida al estudio de las Escrituras. Dicen que este santo ha sido el hombre que en la antigüedad estudió más y mejor la Santa Biblia.
Como asceta y letrado al servicio del Papa Dámaso, tradujo la Biblia de los textos hebreos y griegos al latín. Murió el 30 de septiembre del 420.
30 DE SEPTIEMBRE | Jerónimo es llamado también Jerónimo de Estridón es conocido por haber traducido la biblia del griego y del hebreo al latín por encargo del Papa Dámaso I. La traducción al latín de la Biblia hecha por san Jerónimo, llamada la Vulgata que significa 'edición para el pueblo', fue publicada en el siglo IV y declarada en 1546, durante el Concilio de Trento, la versión auténtica y oficial de la Biblia para la Iglesia católica latina, hasta la promulgación de la Nova Vulgata, en 1979, el que ahora es el texto bíblico oficial de la Iglesia católica.
Es considerado uno de los Padres de la Iglesia, junto a Ambrosio, Agustín y Gregorio. Tambié es uno de los cuatro Padres latinos, y es Doctor de la Iglesia.
SAN JERÓNIMO
Sofronio Eusebio Jerónimo nació en Croacia, alrededor del año 347, proveniente de una familia acomodada y de fe cristiana. Él se enamoró de la vida contemplativa cuando recibió el bautismo "Que tus acciones no desmientan tus palabras”. Partió al oriente, y en Antioquía, Turquía, aprendió griego, después viajó a Alepo en Siria y aprendió hebreo. Aproximadamente a los 32 años se ordenó sacerdote y viajó a Constantinopla. De ahí viajó a Roma donde conoció al Papa Dámaso.

San Jerónimo, doctor de la Iglesia
Natural de Dalmacia (Croacia), Jerónimo, uno de los más sabios escritores eclesiásticos, hizo sus estudios literarios en Roma y se ordenó de sacerdote en Oriente. Vuelto a Roma, el papa San Dámaso le confió la versión latina de la Biblia. Se retiró al desierto y en Belén edificó un monasterio, donde se dio de lleno al estudio de las lenguas orientales y a su gran obra escriturística. Murió en Belén el año 420. La Iglesia lo llama Doctor Máximo en la ciencia de interpretar las Sagradas Escrituras. Su traducción latina de la Biblia, llamada "Vulgata", fue adoptada después por la Iglesia como versión oficial de la Biblia.

Today we remember St. Jerome, Priest & Doctor of the Church.
Jerome was a man of extremes. His real name was Eusebius Hieronymus Sophronius. Jerome wished to study rather than to be a priest, he was ordained. Again he tried the life of a monk in the desert, but impure temptations plagued him. To fight them, he studied Hebrew, wrote letters counseling friends in the spiritual life, and copied books. Finally, Jerome moved to Constantinople. He studied Scripture under the Greek theologian Gregory Nazianzen. Pope Damasus summoned him to Rome and had him translate the Bible into Latin, a 30-year task. His translation, called the Vulgate, became the official text of the Catholic Church.
