A high-scoring response will thoroughly and insightfully explain the function (what the work is meant to do) and the purpose (why it was created) for each piece, linking these to the cultural context. Go beyond stating the obvious and show a nuanced understanding of how purpose and function are embedded in materials, subject matter, and intended audience.
Tips:

• Identify if the work is ritual, decorative, political, narrative, or personal expression, and explain how that is evident

• Connect function and purpose directly to cultural and historical circumstances
