Go beyond stating the obvious and show a nuanced understanding of how purpose and function are embedded in materials, subject matter, and intended audience.
Tips:
Identify if the work is ritual, decorative, political, narrative, or personal expression, and explain how that is evident
Connect function and purpose directly to cultural and historical circumstances
Consider both the original audience and how the work’s purpose might shift for contemporary viewers
