The core of the Diploma Programme model
All DP students will participate in the three course elements that make up the core of the model.
The IB Visual Arts course connects naturally with the three core parts of the IB Diploma, TOK (Theory of Knowledge), the Extended Essay (EE), and CAS (Creativity, Activity, Service). These connections can make your work more meaningful and help you grow as both an artist and a thinker.
1. Visual Arts and TOK
In both TOK and art, you ask big questions, like how we know what we know, or how people interpret images differently across cultures. You can use your understanding of art to create a more personal and powerful TOK exhibition, especially when thinking about the meaning and context of real-world objects.
2. Visual Arts and the Extended Essay
If you're passionate about art, you can choose to write your Extended Essay (EE) in visual arts, or even connect it with another subject area. You’ll dive deep into a topic that matters to you and explore how artists, cultures, or social movements shape the visual world.
3. Visual Arts and CAS
Art can be a powerful part of your CAS experience. Whether you’re painting a mural for your community, leading an art club, or using your creativity to raise awareness for a cause, CAS gives you the chance to apply your artistic skills in real-life, meaningful ways.
Putting It All Together
These three areas, TOK, EE, and CAS, aren’t just extra tasks. They’re chances to deepen your thinking, try out new ideas, and make your learning in visual arts even more connected and impactful.
