Portrait Transfer
Finish Your Contour Design
If not already done, use Procreate (or another drawing app) or drawing tools by hand, to trace the key contour lines of your portrait and add areas of texture or pattern.
Keep your lines bold and clear, this will guide your carving.
Print Your Final Design
Make sure it’s printed at the correct scale for your clay slab (slightly larger than A4).
Use black and white for clarity.
Transfer Onto Slip-Covered Clay
Place your printed image over the clay (design side up).
Use a soft pencil or embossing tool/needle to carefully trace over your lines.
Press gently but firmly to leave a visible impression on the slip surface.
Take your time with this step, the cleaner your transfer, the easier your sgraffito carving will be!
What Makes a Strong Sgraffito Carving:
Clear, Confident Lines: Carve with purpose. Avoid shallow or scratchy lines, aim for smooth, consistent depth.
Line Variation: Use different widths or styles of lines to show contrast, depth, and emphasis.
Texture with Intention: Add patterns or marks that connect to your concept or highlight areas of contrast (hair, clothing, shadows).
Mark-Making Matters: Think about the visual rhythm and direction of your lines. They should enhance the form, not distract from it.
Don’t Over-Carve: Leave some areas of underglaze untouched for contrast and clarity.
Brush away debris often: Keep your surface clean to see your work clearly and avoid smudging.
Take your time. This step brings your design to life, make every mark count.
