Assesses how well the topic and research question are defined and explored.
Research question must be focused, clearly stated, and appropriate for a 4,000-word essay.
Methods used to investigate the question (e.g., analyzing artworks, interviews, textual sources) must be appropriate and well explained.
The essay should maintain a consistent focus throughout.
Ask yourself:
Is my research question clear and focused?
Do I explain how I will investigate it?
Am I using appropriate and credible sources or methods?
Assesses how well the student shows understanding of their topic and subject.
Content must relate specifically to visual arts and demonstrate relevant terminology and concepts.
Application of sources must show depth of understanding and connection to the research question.
Ask yourself:
Am I using visual arts language (e.g., composition, symbolism, medium)?
Do my sources clearly support my understanding of the topic?
Assesses analysis, argument, and evaluation.
Arguments must be well-supported, logical, and focused on answering the research question.
Evaluate sources and consider alternate views or unexpected finding
Ask yourself:
Is my argument clear, reasoned, and backed by evidence?
Have I critically analyzed the artworks and sources?
Assesses the structure and format of the essay.
Must include: title page, table of contents, page numbers, appropriate visuals, citations, and bibliography.
Consistent referencing style is required (MLA, Chicago, etc.).
Stay within 4,000 words—anything beyond will not be read.
Ask yourself:
Is my essay organized and clearly formatted?
Are my images labeled and my sources cited correctly?
Assessed through the Reflections on Planning and Progress Form (RPPF).
Shows personal engagement, decision-making, and growth throughout the research process.
Should reflect your thinking, curiosity, and challenges—not your supervisor’s input.
Ask yourself:
Have I shown how I took ownership of the process?
Did I reflect honestly on challenges, changes, and insights?
