Course Description
The International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme (DP) Visual Arts course is a two-year, inquiry-based, and concept-driven curriculum that encourages students to explore and critically examine visual art through creative processes, contextual studies, and personal exploration. Designed for both Standard Level (SL) and Higher Level (HL) students, the course provides opportunities for artistic experimentation, technical skill development, and theoretical understanding.
Course Objectives
Students will:
Investigate diverse art forms, techniques, and media to develop a deep understanding of visual culture.
Analyze and reflect on art from various cultural, historical, and social contexts.
Engage in sustained creative processes to produce original artworks.
Document their artistic journey and growth in a Visual Arts Journal (VAJ).
Present their work effectively through exhibitions, written reflections, and comparative studies.
Core Components
Visual Arts Journal (VAJ): A personal workbook documenting research, experimentation, and reflection on the creative process.
Exhibition: A curated selection of resolved artworks showcasing technical skill, conceptual depth, and personal vision.
Process Portfolio: A digital submission of developmental work highlighting exploration, innovation, and engagement with media and techniques.
Comparative Study: An independent investigation into artworks, artists, or movements, demonstrating analytical and critical thinking skills.
Assessment
The course is assessed both internally and externally:
Internal: Exhibition (40% of final grade) assessed by the teacher and moderated by the IB.
External: Process Portfolio (40%) and Comparative Study (20%) evaluated by IB examiners.
