Today we will:
Watch artists in action
Add our second color ground
We will have today PLUS 3 more in class days to create this work, don't get too attached to what we put down today - It will change.
Today's takeaways to remember as we work:
Art is about give and take - it is an action put into your work.
You don't need to be afraid of making mistakes in this space, only of not taking the chances to experiment with something new. We're not aiming for realism today, we're aiming for expressive abstraction and capturing emotion.
So let's jump in and allow the artwork to tell you what to do.
Today's takeaways to remember as we work continued:
Remember to document as you go, the success and failures both guide your work.
There's no creation without motion so enjoy the process, it's about making marks and responding to them on the page.
Drawing is simply the arrangement between line and mark within space and has a variety of purposes, don't let overthinking keep you from experiencing it.
We are aiming to create LAYERS on top of LAYERS.
You've created your first colored ground layer, now what goes on top? Will you create a new texture? Will you start to map out your object? What does the second layer of this abstract piece look like to you?
Let's create!
We will be starting the second color ground layer for our Abstract Object art today. Remember the importance of documenting the process for your final work submission. Photos and writing are required pieces of evidence but consider how else you might document your work for your project submission? Take 5 minutes now to look back at the Digital Submission Requirements tab to be sure you know what to take photos of while you work today and over the following weeks.
The documentation of your day-to-day progress will go under Section 4: Create

Today will be highly directed by me - Next class you will have much more freedom to explore the paper as you would like but keeping these routines in mind.
Use as a reference on this project for possible routines to add:
Observed element numerous times in the same drawing (repetition)
Create a series of contour line drawings. (line)
Draw contour line drawings anywhere on the surface (composition)
Make smaller & larger (variety)
Wider and thinner (proportion)
Cluster some drawings together (pattern)
Make some accurate and others interpretive
Take some out, cover others up (veil)
Keep working until the composition holds together (unity)
Color rich, but limited in terms of your palette.
