Refresh: How to "Read" Art
Presentations
1. Presentations
Each of you will share 2 slides (one per artist you picked).
Share:
The artist’s name, where they are from, and the specific artwork.
How you see culture and place in the artwork.
Why you’re interested in this artist.
2. Peer Feedback
After each presentation, we will give feedback. Remember how we "read" artwork
Use art vocabulary when possible (composition, symbolism, mood, context, audience).
Focus your comments on:
Which artist/artwork feels strongest for a full study.
What stood out about how culture and place were shown.
Any connections you see to other artists or ideas.
3. Choosing Your Artist
By the end of class discussion, you’ll decide ONE artist to move forward with.
This will be the artist for your Artist Study.
4. Work Time
After presentations, the remaining time will be for starting your Artist Study/Research Documentation.
Use this time to begin collecting information, sketching motifs, or writing first notes in your Visual Arts Journal.
Reminders:
Be respectful, listen carefully, and take notes on feedback you receive.
Aim for specific, thoughtful comments, not just “I like it.”
Think like an artist: How do culture and place shape identity, and how can that come through in art?
How to Research and Analysing art
Analysis is more than just “reading” an artwork. When you analyze, you go deeper. It means looking carefully at the artwork and researching to understand it fully.
When you analyze, you think about:
Form: the visual characteristics (color, composition, line, shape, texture, materials).
Function: why the artwork was created or what purpose it serves.
Content: the subject matter, symbols, or themes being shown.
Context: what was happening in the artist’s life, their culture, and the wider world at the time.
Analysis is not about deciding whether you like an artwork. It’s about learning to understand what it means, why it was made, and how it communicates ideas.
