Refugees problem

POLICY TOWARDS REFUGEES AND INTERNATIONAL LAW

Jordan faces an incredibly complex refugee situation, hosting the second largest proportion of refugees in the world compared to the number of citizens, and the fifth largest number of refugees in absolute terms. Since the outbreak of political violence in Syria in 2011, more than 620,000 Syrians have been granted asylum in Jordan. Of these, approximately 84 percent live in host communities. The effect is similar to the United States hosting more than 29.4 million refugees in a four-year period. Government estimates of the number of Syrians residing in Jordan amount to 1.4 million, and include people who left before the war.

Legal problems facing the Syrians in Jordan

A study revealed that 58% of the legal issues faced by the refugees were civil and administrative, such as labor, tenants, housing, and birth certificates, in addition to issues with the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees.

26.1% of cases are related to the Personal Status Law, which includes divorce cases, marriage documents, child custody and alimony, and, according to the study, criminal cases faced by refugees constituted the lowest number of cases by 15%.

The results, the statement said, indicate the need to ensure that Syrian refugees have immediate access to legal information, adding that providing legal advice will also help protect refugees from fraud or exploitation.
