Expression of “unrestricted” opinions.

Expression of “unrestricted” opinions.

by Nonni Anagnostopoulou

Do you consider something bad or unfair? Do you disagree with it? Do you want to stand against it? Then, certainly, you have the right to do it. Or maybe, you don't always have it… Autonomously, the right of free speech and expression is statutory and, under normal circumstances, it allows to everyone to frame their opinions, having at the same time equal “portion” with everyone, in this liberty of opinions. Of course, the main representatives of these rights are not others, but the “directly involved” in the spread of news, the journalists. These people, as every other member of a newspaper too, who all together make efforts in order to function proportionally, have one main aim. They want to provide information to the crowd, making known some topics which are “invisible” to the world.

But what happens when these rights are violated or abused by their own supporters? The examples in Greece and in other countries around the world too, are not a few. Corruption, abiding plagiarism and hundreds of attacks against journalists globally, show that the journalistic vocation is facing new perils in a daily basis, which harm its value and its reliability.

Analyzing the phenomenon of plagiarism and the cases of “paid” news, we will see that there is an increasing development of these acts even in our country. Propaganda and biased reportage which “serve” the decisions and the beliefs of a political party while at the same time, on an another article, there are the standpoints of an another political party which will finally “save” our country. Objectivity “is left behind” while the profit dominates! The personal benefit of some people “blur” their discretion and the feel of justice.

At the same frequency remains the phenomenon of thoughtless attacks against Media's people every day. Lot's of Asia's countries and generally countries of the Eastern world “are ranked as the last” when it comes to the freedom of speech, as governments control feasibly all the news which are made public, without hesitating to deselect lots of them, while using violence to the people who don’t defer to these boundaries. Of course, this kind of situations aren't missed in the Western world too and to other “developed” countries, with accidents, some of them fatal, of many reporters who criticized a very “strong” person, who was lots of times enmeshed in the the government or they revealed a scandal in which this person participated. Unfortunately, in cases like this, the guilty are almost never revealed, while people continue getting “injured” as they try to inform the citizens about topics which, in other cases, would never become known.

Nonetheless, even in cases in which our lifes are not in danger, we posit or follow specific limitations according to our topics or the content of our articles. The same holds for the newspaper to which I'm writing right now. I'm wondering lot's of times if I should expand on a topic or add specific opinions and information in my texts. Many topics are described as “sensitive” or “taboos”, and as a result, the reactions of the readers are not the desired and some of them frequently end up being criticized by them.

So, we may still live in an age when even if the freedom of speech and expression is established, it proceeds being violated. Although, it doesn't mean that this can't change! Even if the permutation won't happen immediately, as there are enmeshed people who will not be easy to be confined, our effort must has as a goal, the respect among the other's opinions even if we disagree. Endly, very important for the Media and everyone who is involved in them, is certainly the respect to their journalistic code of conduct.
