GREEN BOOK

GREEN BOOK

By Konstantinos Pigounis

Green Book, a movie that touched everyone and loved by everyone. A film that except for the amazing reviews, won three Oscars at the 2018 awards. Technically, it was almost excellent and the performances by the protagonists, Viggo Mortensen and Mahershala Ali, are truly thrilling and unforgettable.

USA, early 1960s, and Tony "Lip" Valellonga is a folk guy who works as a porter at a nightclub to feed his family. Growing up on the road, he can handle anyone and any difficult job assigned to him. As a result of the lack of money, he is invited to accompany the world-renowned African-American pianist Don Shirley to the hostile in diversity South America. The journey begins, with Tony despite all his racist perceptions, to be loose, talkative, and laddish to Don. A truly unmatched couple in a road movie, ready to affect you with their final destination to be an all-time great and invulnerable friendship.

The story of the movie is based in true facts. A remarkable fact in the movie is the coexistence of two people who belong in different social environments of that time. Our protagonist, starting as a prejudiced and biased person, ends up understanding the opposite side and even supporting it. The change of the apercus of the character is excellent, as it tries to make the viewers aware. A realistic, decent and sweet effort for change. A change we all need to make. The change to embrace the different, the foreign and the unknown.
