The hole left by the bullet closes and “heals” thanks to the flexible polymer. Instead of tearing, it absorbs the bullet’s energy, separates, and comes back together as the friction melts the material, fusing it. This does make it hard to judge exact accuracy, however.
Reactive Steel for the Satisfying “Ding”
One of the most satisfying sounds at the range is the “ding” reactive steel makes when hit. It is easy to tell when you hit the mark, especially from far away. Depending on the type, steel targets can only absorb so much energy, so shooting one from short range with your AR 15 could damage your target. You also will not want to use a higher-caliber handgun, either. These targets are best for medium-to-long distances. You can choose between singles or multiples, often on a tree where each target swings to the side when hit.
Clay Pigeons
One of the more affordable targets is a clay pigeon. Made from clay, these are traditionally thrown or launched into the air and shot with a shotgun. However, you can also set them up on a berm as a small, challenging target. Unlike polymer, however, they will only survive a shot or two from a handgun or rifle before breaking beyond usefulness.
