Look Elsewhere
If you usually go to a big box store to get your ammo, try a gun store. If the gun store does not have anything, try a pawn shop. If none of those places have anything, or you just do not want to leave the comfort of your home, try searching online. Great places to try are online auction sites, which also allow users to sell ammo. That way, you can stock up on your 458 SOCOM before the hunt, instead of hoping that a big box store might have a box of two of what you need.
Change Up Your Calibers
You might want to hunt with 22 250, but it is already a popular hunting round and likely to be hoarded by other huntings during a shortage. Instead, try to find a different caliber, such as 204 Ruger, that is close. It is possible you will need to buy a new firearm, but do you need an excuse for that? The point is to try and use calibers that are not as popular or well-known. If you are looking for 223, 556, 9, 45, or 22, chances are, you are going to be out of luck.
Go for Quality Instead of Quantity
During an ammo shortage, people hoard ammo. The trick is that they go for quantity over quality, maximizing the number of rounds they can get for their dollar. If you look at the big box stores, you might find very expensive but high-quality ammo left. This is because the round-per-cent ratio is not as attractive. However, these rounds will shoot better and cleaner, as they are higher quality.
Handload Your Own Ammo
Most shooters do not hand load. Instead, they just buy ammo. That means you are more likely to find the components for a round, such as the brass, the bullet, and the powder, than you are to find completed rounds in a box. If you have the equipment to make your own rounds, it is easy to weather a shortage.
Practice Dry Firing
Instead of going to the range and wasting expensive 50 Beowulf rounds, practice dry firing at home. You can do it every day and it will make you a better shooter. It trains your brain to not anticipate recoil, builds muscle memory, and can help you better understand where the wall is on your trigger.
