What Is a Three-Gun Competition?
The actual course looks almost like a construction site, with pieces of cut plywood blocking your line of sight and forcing you to adapt and move. Some have holes to shoot through, and others require you to lean over. The targets themselves can be anything from clay pigeons to steel targets. Targets can be anywhere from a single yard to 500 yards away. Some targets are designated as “no shoot” and shooting them costs points. The fastest time with the most targets shot wins.
Limited Division
If you are a beginner, you are likely to find yourself in the Limited class of three-gun. No optics except iron sights are allowed, no bipod on the rifle, no porting on the handguns such as an HK P30L, and no speed loaders for the shotgun, which can be pump-action or semi-automatic with no porting and have a maximum 8+1 rounds.
Open Division
Almost anything goes in the Open class, and in Open Outlaw, anything goes as long as it is safe. If you want to use a Kahr PM9, a handgun more often used for concealed carry, it is allowed. If you want to use a highly customized “race gun” that is only useful for competition with a hair-trigger, optic, long barrel, oversized grip, oversized mag well to make it easier to reload, and cuts to lighten the entire handgun, that is fair game, too.
Tactical Division
Another popular division with beginners, the Tactical class allows a single optic for one of the three guns. You will typically find the courses run with an AR 15, a semi-automatic shotgun with an extended magazine tube, and a semi-automatic handgun with a high capacity magazine.
Heavy Metal or HeMan Class
The rifle must be bigger than the typical AR 15, usually at least 308 or 762x51mm. The shotgun must be a pump-action 12-gauge, and the handgun must be a single-stack 45 ACP, such as a typical 1911.
