223 Wylde
The 556 NATO and 223 Remington cartridges are very close. Siblings, rather than cousins. However, it is a common piece of AR-wisdom that the 556 NATO is a bit over-pressured for an AR 15 chambered for 223 Remington, while an AR 15 chambered for 556 NATO does not have optimal accuracy when using the other cartridge. Gunsmith Bill Wylde decided to fix the problem. He designed a chamber that can safely accommodate the pressure of 556 NATO cartridges and sacrifices no accuracy when fed 223 Remington. With all of the load options available in 223 Remington and 556 NATO, that is great news for fans of the AR 15.
458 SOCOM or 50 Beowulf
The 458 SOCOM or 50 Beowulf cartridges are not identical, both certainly feature distinct ballistic profiles, but they are grouped together here because they are both thumpers of a cartridge. They can both prove useful as hunting cartridges. They are particularly popular with deer hunters in states that only allow straight-walled cartridges. Additionally, the 458 SOCOM and 50 Beowulf are considered effective rounds against virtually any big game south of the Arctic Circle.
22 LR and 22 WMR
Just as some of the largest cartridges the AR 15 can be chambered for have their uses, so do some of the smallest. For instance, the world’s most famous black rifle can be chambered for the venerable 22 LR and its big cousin, the 22 WMR (22 Magnum). An AR 15 chambered for 22 LR is popular as a training option for the young or those just getting into the platform. Being 22 LR, it also remains one of the front-line small game rounds and provides gun enthusiasts with hours of affordable plinking fun. The 22 WMR is an often overlooked and underrated cartridge that packs a decent punch but not so much of a kick.
350 Legend
The 350 Legend is the most obscure inclusion here and created for a very specific purpose—deer hunting in states that disallow bottleneck shells. If you are a hunter in a state in which bottleneck hunting rounds are verboten, and you are hesitant to chamber your AR 15 with a monster like 50 Beowulf (or 458 SOCOM), the 350 Legend cartridge is a great option.
