Roller-Delayed Blowback
The German-engineered roller-delayed blowback system, found on many Heckler & Koch guns, may seem simple at first glance but was quite the feat during World War II development. With a roller-delayed firearm, the cartridge, when fired, presses on the breech face, which tries to move the bolt assembly. Two rollers prevent this. The locking piece has to move back, which causes a delay before the bolt head retracts and cycles a round. While it sounds complicated, it makes for simpler firearms.
Vector-Delayed Blowback
Very few firearms use a vector-delayed blowback system. The most famous is the KRISS Vector. The system allows the bolt and an inertia blow to travel downward instead of back, behind the mag well, which reduces recoil and muzzle climb. If you want to improve your accuracy, this is one to take for a spin.
Revolvers That Also Shoot Shotgun Shells
Two types of revolvers shoot shotgun shells. The LeMat is a famous Wild West nine-shooter with a main cylinder that revolves around a second chamber that holds a 20-gauge shotshell. Another well-known revolver is the Judge pistol, notably named as it was once popular with judges in Miami, Florida. It is chambered for 45 Colt but also accents 410 bore shotshells. Firing Micro Rockets
The MBA Gyrojet fires, as the name implies, micro rockets. These feature angled ports at the base, which contained propellant, and a primer in the center. The trigger made a striker hit the nose of the Microjet, driving it back into a fixed pin. This hit the primer, igniting the ports, and the rocket shot out at 1,250 fps. It was unfortunately unreliable, slow to reload, and horribly inaccurate. The project folded after a few years, but it is still an interesting firearm to know about.
Firing From the Bottom Chamber
Nearly all revolvers fire from the top cylinder. The Chiappa Rhino family of revolvers instead fires from the bottom cylinder. This brings the bore axis down, helping to make the revolvers more accurate and have less felt recoil.
A Bullpup Pistol
Typically, you only find bullpup rifles. With the Bond Arms Bullpup 9, you can also have a bullpup pistol. The unique mechanism is a rear-feeding magazine that rests below the rotating barrel’s chamber. This means it can have a longer barrel but not a longer slide.
