Kel Tec’s effective use of lightweight polymers is one of their defining characteristics and it is never put to better use than with the Kel Tec PF9. Kel Tec convincingly asserts that the slim, ultralight PF9 is the flattest and lightest pistol chambered for 9mm that’s ever been mass-produced. The only 9mm pocket pistol that seems to approach the comfortable, effective concealability of the PF9 is the also phenomenal Kahr PM9.
Lord of Plinking: Kel Tec CP33
Imagine a group of adolescent rimfire fanatics are brought together in one room and given nothing but some paper, pencils, and a whole bunch of espresso. They are directed to design the awesomest, most tacticool 22 LR handgun possible. Also, they are engineering geniuses. The result would be the quadruple-stack rimfire masterwork that is the Kel Tec CP33. The Kel Tec CP33 is a true monument to plinking with a 33+1 capacity, a suppressor-ready threaded barrel, and a charging handle rather than a slide. It is fun in gun form.
Pioneering Performance: Kel Tec PMR30
The Kel Tec PMR30 is notable for its almost startling lightness and for being chambered in the respectable and underrated 22 WMR, or 22 Magnum. It also stands out for its whopping 30+1 capacity. However, perhaps most impressive is that Kel Tec was able to engineer a 22 WMR pistol with a double-stack magazine that feeds like a dream. That is a true accomplishment.
The Game-Changer: Kel Tec P50
When the word spread that Kel Tec was working on a new handgun chambered for an iconic cult favorite—the bottleneck hot-rod 57x28mm—many assumed it would be similar to the PMR30. Being Kel Tec, they blew everyone’s expectations out of the water. The Kel Tec P50 is like nothing anyone has seen before. It is a 15-inch top-breaking semi-automatic pistol that accepts a horizontal FN P90 magazine sporting a 50-round capacity that is sandwiched in the middle of the gun. Somehow, Kel Tec managed to dwarf the previously epic-seeming handgun capacities of 30 and 33 for the PMR30 and CP33 respectively. The only question now is—what will they think of next?
