Compound Fracture

Peachtree Teen
Set in rural West Virginia in 2017, Compound Fracture is a tremendously suspenseful, queer coming-of-age thriller that confronts the impact of economic injustice, local political corruption, and generational trauma. In 1917, the sheriff of Twist Creek County executed a man named Saint Abernathy, leader of the coal miners’ strike, by hammering a railroad spike through his mouth. A century later, the mines have closed, but Miles Abernathy is caught up in the cycle of oppression and violent vengeance that killed his great-great-grandfather, Saint. On the night of the annual high school graduation party, Miles hits send on an email telling his parents he’s trans and then sneaks out of the house with photos stolen from his father’s lockbox—photos offering proof that Sheriff Davies caused the “accident” that killed Miles’ former best friend Cooper’s mother five years ago. Before Cooper and Miles can decide on their next steps, the feud is reignited, and neither of them can outrun the flames. White captures the violence of oppression with vivid and lethal precision.

Andrew Joseph White (he/him) grew up in Virginia and began writing before he could actually write, offering scribbled paper to his parents with demands that they read the illegible nonsense back to him. After drafting several novels in middle and high school, he attended George Mason University for his bachelor's and master's in creative writing.
He is the author of three New York Times bestselling horror novels for teens and young adults: Hell Followed With Us (a William C. Morris Debut Award Finalist), The Spirit Bares Its Teeth (a 2024 Stonewall Honor), and Compound Fracture (a 2025 Printz Honor). His work focuses on the intersection of transgender and autistic identity through the lens of horror, monstrosity, violence, and rage. His upcoming novels include his adult debut You Weren't Meant to be Human (2025), and two more YA novels, You're No Better (2026) and Beast//Warden (2027).
Andrew has settled just outside of Washington, D.C. with his wife, their cat Poppy, and a library's worth of books.
