The Princess and the Grilled Cheese Sandwich
Deya Muniz
Little, Brown Ink
This graphic novel has it all: beautiful artwork, a heart-warming love story, fabulous friendships, and most importantly, lots of cheese. It centers around Lady Camembert, whose father tells her that after he dies, the only way she can live the life she wants to (and not have to marry a man) is to move far away and disguise herself as a man. Going by Count Camembert, she soon grows bored of the low-profile lifestyle her father recommended she keep in order to maintain the disguise. She meets Princess Brie, and the two bond over a love of fashion and grilled cheese. Cam and Brie both soon realize that they like the other more than just a friend. But can they really become something more with Cam's secret between them?

Discussion questions
Being a princess gives Brie more freedom to break boundaries and set a new standard, despite the societal limitations around gender and sexuality—yet even as an activist, she balks at the idea of upending the status quo. Meanwhile, from the start, Cam rejects the “safe” path of marrying a man, but then has to choose between the safety of living a secretive life versus pursuing a chance at love. How does the notion of 'safety' and cultural norms change with each character, even as they change themselves?
If you could write a novel and use any food as a major theme/plot point or symbolic gesture, what would it be and why?

Write about being misunderstood. You might not have experienced anything like Lord Camembert, but everyone has had something. Can you connect with Cam at all?
