WISMUN V (CREATIVITY)

5: Demonstrate the skills and recognize the benefits of working collaboratively

1: Identify own strengths and develop areas for growth

I have been apart of the Wells MUN Club for over three years now. I am currently in my Junior year and apart of the secretariat. I am the treasurer of the Wells MUN Club. Prior to the day of WISMUN V, which was held on the 10th of November, I was handling all the issues relating to money. For instance, I was in charge of the invoices, receipts, and so much more for each school interested in our MUN. Fortunately, I received aid from two students in the grade below who were helping me with both the invoices and receipts. Since I am the treasurer, I was still in charge of making sure that these students got their work done. This gave me the chance to work on my leadership skills. I was able to effectively make sure that they did what they had to do on time. This relates to the fifth CAS learning outcome as I was able to demonstrate the skills and recognize the benefits of working collaboratively. There were a few challenges presented during my time of working with the two freshmens, such as not having the same idea, not having an open communication system, and more. However, I was able to use my skill of staying on task to make sure that what needed to be communicated was communicated to get the work done. The benefits of this collaboration is that it enhanced my team working ability. This challenged my potential to work with new people with differing perspectives.

Moreover, I expected this conference to flow smoothly with no problems as everyone apart of the Officers team put so much of their time and effort into making this a successful conference. Unfortunately, on the day of the conference, a lot of problems erupted. In my opinion, this was due to the lack of communication of the team. For example, there were things that needed to be done by someone, but wasn't because the individual didn't know that he/she had to do this. To elaborate, most of the officers stayed after school one day to prepare the last minute things for the conference. We were not able to complete everything we had to in time. Thus, we left some small jobs for the officers that were coming to school on the following day, Saturday. However, no one informed them that they had to do the small jobs that we weren't able to finish in time. This led to problems on the day of the conference. My feelings toward the different situations on the day were all stressful as there were a lot of problems that were to be fixed. For instance, some committees were missing plaque cards. I had to remake all of them and deliver it to each committee. This was stressful because the printer wasn’t working. I had to find a way to solve this problem. Instead of being time efficient, I wasted time stressing about the issue. This relates to the first CAS learning outcome: “Identify own strengths and develop areas for growth.” The strength I realized that I had was identifying problems quickly. However, I realize that I’m not very good at taking action about it instantly because I begin to panic. This is an area of growth for me. Being able to spot a problem and then take action on it instantly is an important quality for a leader.

Overall, this was a stressful, but fun experience for me. Apart from working as a member of the officer’s committee, I joined one of the conferences for a little bit and inputted my voices. I joined the ICJ committee where I was a Palestinian witness. This was interesting for me as I have never been on an organizing committee and been apart of the activities organized at the same time. This was a new experience for me as I was able to experience both sides.
