1. Lettuce
Many people still find it hard to believe, but lettuce is one of those vegetables that are very easy to grow. Imagine serving your roommates with some homegrown salad over an all-nighter for your group project. You don’t need a huge pot for your patch of lettuce. However, make sure you have a wide enough space because these seeds need to be planted about 4 to 5 inches apart.
2. Basil
Basil is one of the most aromatic edible leaves that can be found on the planet, adds Garry Y. Itkin. Adding this simple ingredient to a meal as mundane as tuna and pasta, or even scrambled eggs, can significantly level up your whole dining experience. The good news is that you can easily grow it in a pot or a plant box in your dorm, with just enough sunlight and water to maintain it.
3. Potatoes
It’s fun to grow vegetables in your own dorm, especially one that yields your own source of carbohydrates. If your dorm has enough space to accommodate a trash bin, that’s all the farmland you’ll need. Fill the bottom of the bin with a few of inches of soil and compost mix as a base to plant your seed potatoes in. Make sure you keep the soil moist and as you see the sprouts come out, add dirt that’s enough to cover it up. Soon enough you’ll have some spuds to harvest. Fancy some french fries or hashbrowns? With your potato bin, that is now literally within your reach.
