"Everyone in this world is in it for themselves."
-Roland, Second Chance
Roland is one of the six people who betrayed Gio. He represents the cardinal sin of Envy. He is also considered the main antagonist of Second Chance for most of the story, until some of Mori's ulterior motives start to come out.
Roland is a tall, thin young man. He has thick, styled black hair and glasses.
Roland seems to be the de facto 'leader' of Gio's former friend group. He comes across as a grounded person, keeping his friends in line. His main philosophy on life, as quoted above, is that "everyone in this world is in it for themselves." He believes that any action, whether it's generally perceived as selfless or selfish, is only done by anyone to further their own interests. This outlook on life can be retroactively observed in the entirety of Second Chance, through many scenes where Roland is both alone and with other people.
Contrary to every other Second Chance character (whose home life is known), Roland comes from a background that seems extremely stable. His parents are still married, and shower each other and their son with utmost love and affection. They know the names of Roland's friends, and ask how they're doing. Roland's parents even acknowledged Gio's rocky home situation, and sometimes took him in for days at a time. It's unknown why Roland is the way he is, or how he adopted his outlook on life.
Roland was named after Roland Crane from Ni No Kuni II: Revenant Kingdom, despite the fact that the two act nothing alike.
Gio, Oscar, and Roland were originally made for a slice-of-life story. After some real-life complications, all three characters were heavily changed and repurposed for Second Chance.
