Lesson 16: Applications of Taylor Series

Lesson Preview

  • So, of what use are all thee Taylor series results that we've now developed? In this lesson we'll survey a few of those uses and applications. In Module 1 we'll compute the binomial series. This series comes in handy when trying to approximate quantities of the form (a+b)^n, which happens a lot in mathematics and in intermediate steps in science applications. In Module 2 we'll see how to use Taylor series to find the sum of a convergent infinite series, something we've only been able to do thus far for a limited class of series (e.g., geometric series). Finally, in Module 3 we'll see how to use Taylor series to help evaluate limits.
