What Will We Learn?

  • In this lesson we'll start learning shortcuts for calculating derivatives. We'll focus first on some simple properties -- like the fact that the derivative of a sum of two functions is the sum of derivatives of each function -- and then learn about the Power Rule and the Product Rule.


Why Do We Need to Learn This?

  • The limit definition of the derivative contains so much insight into what derivatives are. But it's a cumbersome way to calculate derivatives. Are there faster ways? Yes. The differentiation rules we learn in this and the next lesson will dramatically speed up our calculation of derivatives.
