I had a somewhat varied background before finally deciding to do a PhD. As an Environmental Studies undergraduate, I previously studied bee distributions in Singapore with the aid of Species Distribution Modelling algorithms, and published a paper as first author. Then, I worked for 2 years as a Management Associate in Schneider Electric before deciding that corporate life wasn’t for me. In the end, I decided to head back to school to return to where I feel most at home – out in the field!
As part of my PhD research, I hope to contribute to EMEL’s efforts to green our hardened coastlines, with a specific focus on Sargassum and other macroalgae species. Can these ecosystem builders successfully create new, thriving habitats on these breakwaters and seawalls, while contributing to the walls’ flood mitigation potential? What management regimes might the macroalgae require, or what or downstream applications might they contribute to?

Coastal urbanisation and climate change are driving ocean sprawl (the global proliferation of manmade structures such as seawalls), leading to losses of biodiversity and ecosystem services in urban coasts. The overarching objective of this project is to provide a comprehensive assessment of the ecological, physical, and engineering requirements for coastal protection systems, and to develop multi-functional, adaptive shoreline designs with ‘green’ element, integrating climate change and land use considerations.
