These are the concept designs that I did for our cover page for the Andrew Grant digital magazine.
Wireframes
This first wireframe on the left was an idea for a cover page that I had that was in the style of a magazine but in a digital format. The background would be an image and then the text would be on top of that like you would see on a paper magazine. I chose to do it in this style so it would represent the traditional magazine style. I put the Andrew Grant logo at the top left of the page so it is obvious who the magazine belongs to, and then their eyes will be drawn down the information on the page which is columnised and centre of the page to lead them finally to the title of the magazine. As I think it is important for the reader to get a idea of what the magazine is about and therefore the title will be remembered and it makes sense contextually.
This wireframe is a similar to the previous design however the title of the digital magazine is at the top of the page. This is so that it is obvious what the magazine is a what it may be about, however the reader is then further informed by the little bits of information that are positioned down the side of the page. I chose for this design to have the text off to the right hand side, this is so that it may compliment the background image better than the first design might. as it may be clearer to see what the image is and therefore help set the tone of the magazine. I chose to put the Andrew Grant logo at the bottom of the page on this design as the client said that they wished the magazine to be more client and customer orientated and therefore I didn't want the company to be the first selling point of the magazine. However we still want to keep it on brand therefore the logo is still on the cover page.
This wireframe is very simplistic compared to the previous ones, this is because I think the background image should be able to draw enough attention to the site that the viewer wants to find out more. The title will also be on the page to show what it is the cover up and there would be a button such as 'explore' that would when clicked take the user to the homepage of the digital magazine as that is the page they will be able to find out more information and decide wether they are interested in reading the magazine.
Digital Mock Ups
This digital render is from the first wireframe I created, but we made this digital mock up as a team, the image used in this idea is symbolic of Andrew Grant focusing on the client, and the houses becoming homes, the door represents leading them into your lifestyle and home, which is the focus of the magazine. Also it can all symbolise a entrance to the website itself as it is only the cover page and therefore works as an opening age. These is some very shot simple text on the page to give an indication to the content that can be found in the magazine but enough to entice people to want to find out more and not put them off. Also the title on this page is in the style of my favourite typeface design I experimented with, which I think looks really good as it makes the magazine look clean and sophisticated. The Andrew Grant logo is also on the page to show who created the magazine itself and the red fade makes the red not to bold and overpowering but it is there to keep the deign on brand,
This is a digital mock up that I have created for the second wire frame. I have used the working title that the client has given us. I chose to use a bold white typeface for the title on the page, this is because the background has lots of dark tones so therefore this would stand out well against it. The AG also being red on this design to represent the brand and also it links to name of the brand. Then the text on this design informs the viewer of the content of the magazine, therefore they have an idea of what they will get to read about. The image I chose for this idea was Christmas theme because as a group we decided we would make a seasonal issue and therefore it would be consistent throughout the magazine.I chose this to be an image of a house interior so that it relates to lifestyle and to the estate agency revolving around housing. i also chose to put a fade on the image so that it keeps the red of the brand in the design but it also makes a good stylistic approach to incorporating the logo into the design too.
The next digital mock up was inspired by a more web based lay out, from my third wireframe, this cover page is more simplistic and just supplies a portal to the magazine. This is then important for the image used to speak for the magazine as a whole and show the tone and style. With it being a winter issue the photographs I have chosen as examples are all based around this. The first designs below are different variations of the same idea, with the title of the magazine this time in a black text, due to the nature of the background, there is also an explore button that would be a link to the first page of the magazine site. I chose to add a red fade on these designs as it then brings the back to the Andrew Grant brand, it also helps to include the logo on the page as it is part of the page. I think the logo that is positioned in the right bottom hand corner is in the best position and therefore I also think the fade coming from that same corner is the best design as it is not as intense as the other fades and therefore does not take too much of the focus away from the image.
The next digital mock ups are the same text and fade design as the pervious ones, however I have used a different image in the background. I think this image is more inviting that the first one as it has a cuteness appeal. I had to change the text to white so that it is clear and readable on top of the background image. It also adds more to the composition of the page as the text has to fit around the composition of the image, which I think Andrew Grant are lacking on their own website as it does not have as their cover banner is covered up by a text box and therefore it is not effective as the viewer cant work out what is going on. Therefore it was important for me to make the background image as important as the text on the page. With this concept I have tried the cover page with and without the fade, I do believe this design is better with the fade as it fills the negative space in that corner of the page and therefore the viewer has more to look at and it draws the viewers attention to the Andrew Grant logo so that it is obvious who created the magazine.
This final digital render idea is my favourite, I think the background image is the most effective, as it has the winter theme but it also relates to interior decor at this time of year which relates to some of the pages we have chosen to use in the magazine, therefore subconsciously giving the reader an idea of what they might find in the magazine. Also the depth of field used in this image is important as differently to the pervious designs the image behind the text is out of focus but still feels in close proximity, which adds a sense of warmth and home in the image and it also makes the text is even clearer and easier to read.
