税金・税制に関する学習を予定しています。アメリカでは大規模な税制改革が行われようとしています。日本では財務省が (日本の) 税制改革概要を公開しています。"When America sneezes, the rest of the world catches a cold." と言われます。日本も、アメリカがくしゃみをすると、風邪を引く可能性があります。

世界保健機関 (WHO) は、"Sugary Drinks" (砂糖がたくさん入った飲み物) を課税対象にする事で肥満と肥満が原因による糖尿病などを防止する事を促しています。日本でも (親子で) 顕著になっている肥満問題を考える為に、医療関係者も含めて論題に関する知識を英語と日本語で学びます。

"Pros and Cons of Standardized Tests" -- Standardized Tests（標準化されたテスト）の是非を考える

Resolution for 10/21: Critical thinking should be part of the standardized tests in Japan.

Resolution for 10/28: Japan should significantly reduce the reliance of standardized testing as a measure of academic achievement.

10月は4回に渡り、Standardized Testsについて、様々な角度から考察してディベートを行います。10月7日および14日は、参考文献を読みながら基礎知識を学び、10月21日は、10月28日のディベートに備え、立論の構成を考えます。10月28日は、2チームに分かれ、実際にディベートを行います。準備は不要ですが、トピックに興味のある方は、下記リンクをご覧になって下さい。

Should a family require a shared surname?

Resolution 決議(案) "A family does not require a shared surname." 「家族は、同姓を必要としない。」

現在の日本国民法には、「結婚に際して，男性又は女性のいずれか一方が，必ず氏を改めなければなりません。」とあります。実際、結婚後女性が男性の姓を選ぶケースが殆どですが、それは女性に対して社会的不便・不利益を生じて、様々な分野で男女間格差を生じている可能性があります。

WORLD ECONOMIC FORUM (世界経済フォーラム) が発表したGlobal Gender Gap Report (世界男女格差レポート) 2016 によると、日本における男女の格差・差別ランキングは世界第111位です。日本はもっと真剣に男女の格差を無くす努力をすべきと思われます。

昨年の米国大統領選挙でトランプ氏に敗れたヒラリー・クリントン前国務長官のフルネームはHillary Diane Rodham Clinton です。 Dianeはミドルネームで、Rodhamは旧姓です。正式に署名する時は、Hillary Rodham Clinton となってます。日本では、通常 Given (First) Name と Family (Last) Name 以外に他の名前を含める事はありませんが、戸籍に複数の名前を載せることが可能な場合もあります。

ほぼ同一民族で構成されている日本社会では、多民族国家における個人の名前が持つ深い意味を理解することが難しいと思います。アメリカでは家系図を作るソフト (Genealogy Software) が多数あり、Family Lineage を大切にする傾向があります。

"The power of names" でグーグル検索すると、実にたくさんヒットします。名前に対する意識の高さを反映していると思います。Shakespeare の"Romeo and Juliet" Act II, Scene II での有名な台詞に、"A rose by any other name would smell as sweet" (バラはどんな名前で呼んでも良い香りがする - weblio) があります。この第一版は1597年に出ましたが、現在でも考えさせられる要素を多く含んでいます。

9月は5回に渡り、この問題を様々な角度から考察してディベートします。他、Lincoln-Douglas 形式のディベートについても学びます。準備は不要ですが、トピックに興味のある方は、参考リンクをご覧になって下さい。

Should we study logical fallacies?

今月は4回にわたり、ディベートに限らず日常のコミュニケーションの中でも頻繁に使われている「誤謬」(logical fallacy) を紹介します。誤謬は、状況に応じて、詭弁、論過、虚偽とも言います。

ブリタニカ国際大百科事典で、「誤謬 (ごびゅう)」とは「思考内容と対象との一致しない思惟、判断などをいい、真理の反対語。」と説明されています。

通常ディベーターは約20の誤謬を理解して組み合わせたり使い分ける事が必要になりますが、その中から代表的な誤謬を効果的に使うためのドリルも実際のディベートを通して毎回行います。お時間ある方は、下のリンクをご参照下さい。

Should we study basic debate skills?

今月は4回に渡り、ディベートの基礎色々とそのスタイルを英語と日本語で学びます。

8日は概論を、15日は、Opening Statement (立論)、Closing Statement (総括) の準備方法、 22日(土)は、15日の復習に加えて、立論と総括をいかに効果的に行うかの実験を行います。準備不要ですが、興味ある方はYouTubeで "how to be persuasive" と検索してご覧ください。「説得力」で検索すると日本語でヒントが得られます。

7/29日(土)は、ディベートのCross-Examination (詰問) と Rebuttal (反証) の復習、さらにそれらをassertiveに行うための実験を行います。Assertiveの名詞形はassertiveness (自己発言力) です。これは、英語でコミュニケーションをする上で (どの言葉でも同じことが言えますが) 非常に大切な要素です。興味ある方はYouTubeで "how to be assertive" と検索してご覧ください。「発言力」で検索すると日本語でヒントが得られます。
