ƐI-Terrace is a nonpartisan, non-profit initiative dedicated to strengthening peace and democratic society through dialogue. It is rooted in an international research group founded in Boston in 2001 and continues to connect the U.S.-Japan with the wider global community.
We believe that understanding today’s complex world requires more than information alone. It requires the ability to listen carefully, think independently, and engage with others respectfully—especially across differences.
In an age shaped by information overload, emotional polarization, and misunderstanding, ƐI-Terrace provides spaces for calm, constructive dialogue. Our work encourages people to consider history, culture, and context while exploring multiple perspectives on challenging social and global issues.

At the center of our work is Empathetic Intelligence (ƐI), a framework that emphasizes deep listening, cognitive flexibility, and the ethical use of emotional awareness to navigate today’s complex social and political environments. It encourages learning widely, thinking critically, and understanding events in their broader context.
The landscape of democratic governance has shifted significantly. Before 2020, democratic vulnerabilities were largely internal—marked by increasing political polarization, fragmented civic discourse, and eroding trust in institutions.
Since 2020, a new wave of external pressures has transformed the global geopolitical order. Understanding newly emerging terms, narratives, and meanings has become essential in a rapidly evolving, AI-shaped information environment.
This period has seen the resurgence of authoritarian regimes deploying sophisticated disinformation campaigns, the weaponization of information to destabilize democratic processes, and the erosion of core democratic norms—contributing to a widespread crisis of legitimacy.
