Fundamentals

SPARTAN WAY

• CUL·TURE: Teach fundamentals during high tempo/high rep practice, then add an opponent & compete.

• COM·MU·NI·CA·TION: Teach communication is “A NAME” + “A COMMAND”. For example,“Jimmy, got your help." In our program, "COMMUNICATION TERMS ARE IN QUOTES, BOLD, & ITALICS" and all coaches and players should use these terms.

STICKWORK (fundamentals)

• STICKWORK PROGRAM: Teach passing & catching fundamentals without defense, then add defense & compete

• PASSING RULE: "THROW HARD", "OVER THE TOP", "FOLLOW THRU"

• CATCHING RULE: "GIVE A TARGET", don't "HANG YOUR STICK"

• OFFENSIVE RULE: "CATCH IT LOADED" (aka Triple Threat - shoot/pass/dodge) = "feet set", "elbows up", "stick up/butt at target"

ground balls (fundamentals)

• GB PROGRAM: Teach ground ball fundamentals without defense, then add defense & compete

• GB RULE: Accelerate thru the ball, "SHOVEL, DON'T RAKE", "RUN TO GREEN"

• OFFENSIVE RULE: After winning GB, “SWING IT” (aka "PASS...PASS...RE-DODGE") to the opposite side of field with advantage

dodging (fundamentals)

• DODGING PROGRAM: Teach dodging fundamentals without defense, then add defense & compete

• DODGING RULE: Once you dodge, and draw the slide, you have done your job. Now move the ball!

• OFFENSIVE RULE: "DODGE...PASS...PASS...RE-DODGE"

Goalies (fundamentals)

• GOALIE PROGRAM: Teach goalies without offense, then add offense & compete

• GOALIE RULE: Goalie is the leader of the defense and must know the right defensive terms to "COMMUNICATE"

• DEFENSIVE RULE: Simplify the lacrosse save. "Lead Step", "Lead Hand"

faceoffs (fundamentals)

• FACEOFF PROGRAM: Teach faceoffs without opponent, then add an opponent & compete

• FOGO RULE: Win the face off & give the ball to a teammate OR make your opponent fight to escape your faceoff X

• FACEOFF RULE: Make a strategy with your wings
