10/31/16 Regional Championship Results

The 2016 Canal Winchester XC campaign came to an end over the weekend at Saturday's Pickerington North Regional.

Three Indian athletes competed in the Regional Championships: senior Luke Schirr (88th place), junior Erica Babusci (34th place), and senior Ethan Fusek (24th place).

Using an "Always Be Closing" mentality, Erica and Ethan both enjoyed tremendous finishes over the last mile of their races. Erica was in 51st place at the two-mile mark and managed to pass 17 competitors over the last mile. Ethan was in 40th place at the two-mile mark and managed to pass 16 competitors over the last mile.

Erica's 34th place finish is the highest regional finish by a CW female since Kayla Scott won the race in 2011. Only three CW females have finished higher at a regional meet since the Indians were classified Division 1 in 2009 (Kayla Scott 1st in 2011 & 18th in 2009, Emily Pifer 4th in 2009, Penny Boswell 13th in 2009.)

Ethan's 24th place finish is the second best Division 1 Regional finish by a CW male athlete (Jarrod Genther was 16th in 2010 and 24th in 2011. The guys team was also classified D1 in 2009.)

Congrats to Luke, Erica, and Ethan on their fantastic seasons!

10/24/16 Babusci, Fusek, Schirr Qualify to Regionals

The High School Cross Country teams competed at the D1 Central District Championships at Watkins Memorial High School on Saturday. Neither squad qualified to the regional meet as a team, but both squads will be represented by individual competitors at next Saturday's Pickerington Regional.

The High School Girls ended their season with a breakout performance, finishing 9th in their section (and 21st out of all sections combined). Six of the seven girls competitors enjoyed season best marks, and the team's top 5 average of 20:46 was their best of the year by 22 seconds. Ranked 38th entering the race, junior Erica Babusci dropped over 30 seconds from her season best time to finish 20th (19:49) and nab the final individual qualifying spot. Junior Kassidy Pastor finished 22nd, narrowly missing an individual birth with the first sub-20 performance of her career (19:59).

The High School Guys ended their season with a disappointing 7th place finish in their section (19th out of all sections combined). Shortly after passing the half mile mark in 30th place, freshman Reece Klamorick took a violent fall and the guys team had difficulty recovering throughout the remainder of the race. Fortunately for the Indians, the team's two senior competitors both finished well in the top 20 to advance as individuals. Ethan Fusek's 8th place finish (16:16) was the third best D1 district finish in school history and Luke Schirr followed closely behind in 12th (16:24). Junior James Moore enjoyed a season best mark for the boys team, finishing 72nd in 18:20.

Ethan & Luke will race at 12:30pm next Saturday while Erica will race at 3pm.

Congratulations boys and girls teams on another great season, and best of luck to our individual competitors!

10/18/16 Both Teams Place 2nd at OCC Championships

The High School Girls & High School Guys teams both placed second at last Saturday's OCC-Capital Championships held at Newark High School.

Girls scores: New Albany 40, Canal Winchester 47, Big Walnut 52, Newark 92

After losing to New Albany and Big Walnut by nearly 50 points two weeks ago at Pickerington North's Panther Invitational, the girls team bounced back with their most competitive effort of the season. The girls squad led team scoring by 5 points through everyone's first three scorers, however New Albany's depth (New Albany placed 7 in the top 14) proved too much for the Indians to handle.

Guys scores: Newark 25, Canal Winchester 34, New Albany 68, Big Walnut 112

After bettering Newark by 8 points at last week's Marion Harding Invitational, the guys team was unable to match their previous success against a determined Wildcat team. The Indian's did enjoy the best "fifth man" and "sixth man" in the meet (Evan Young finished 10th & Jared Tomlinson finished 12th), however Newark's top four scorers all beat CW's top four scorers at their respective positions to secure the title.

Erica Babusci (3rd), Kassidy Pastor (4th), and Paige Bormann (7th) all received First Team All-OCC honors for their top 7 finishes.

Ethan Fusek (3rd) and Luke Schirr (4th) earned First Team All-OCC honors for the guys team.

These performances mark the first time in program history that any CW cross country athlete earned First Team All-OCC honors (Canal Winchester joined the OCC in 2013).

Nice work, Indians, and best of luck this Saturday at District Competition!

10/11/16 Regular Season Finale at Harding Invitational

All four CW cross country teams competed at Saturdays Harding Invitational at Harding High School in Marion.

The Middle School Girls finished 4th of 11 teams with 91 points, while the Middle School Boys finished 3rd of 13 teams with 90 points.

The High School Girls finished 5th of 17 teams with 163 points. The High School Guys finished 3rd of 17 teams with 87 points, losing by 8 points to 2015 D1 state qualifying team Ashland and by 1 point to defending D2 state champion Lexington.

The flat terrain and cooler weather led to a very quick course, as many athletes set season best marks. A few school records fell on Saturday:

Allena Klamorick's mark of 11:54 set a CW middle school girls record (previous record was 11:57 set by Chloe Palmer in 2011).

Reece Klamorick's mark of 16:40 set a CW freshman record (previous record was 16:49 set by Dennis Duckworth in 1983).

The High School Guys' top 5 average of 16:36 set a new single race average record (previous record was 16:37 set by the 2007 squad at Galion).

Nice work on Saturday Indians! The middle school teams return to action today with a dual meet at Lancaster while the high school teams kick off their championship season with the OCC-Capital Championships at Newark on Saturday.

10/07/16 Pickerington North "Panther" Invitational Results

The high school teams previewed the regional course last weekend, competing in the Panther Invitational at Pickerington North High School.

The High School Girls, led by junior Kassidy Pastor's season best effort (21:12; 35th place), finished 10th out of 17 teams (279 points). Abby Obert & Hannah Cronin also enjoyed season best marks in the race.

The High School Guys placed very well, finishing 4th out of 16 teams (111 points), trailing only conference rival Newark and two teams from West Virginia. Trey Wildenthaler & Cory Davis enjoyed season best marks for the guys team.

Both teams will compete again at tomorrow's Harding Invitational hosted by Marion-Harding High School.

09/25/16 Indians Perform Well at Saturday Night Lights!

The high school teams took advantage of cooler evening weather to perform very well at yesterday's Saturday Night Lights held at Centerville High School. Prior to the race, meet management assigned teams to either the "Championship," "Varsity A," or "Varsity B" race depending upon their perfomances thus far in the season. The High School girls were assigned to the "Varsity A" race while the High School guys were assigned to the top-level "Championship" race.

The High School Girls finished 10th out of 28 teams in their race, averaging a season best of 21:45 for their top five scorers (previous season best was 22:05 at Whetstone).

The High School Guys finished 12th out of 21 teams in their race, averaging a season best of 16:58 for their top five scorers (previous season best was 17:16 at the Canal Winchester Invitational). The race marked only the fourth season in school history where the team managed a top five average of under 17 minutes in a single race.

All told, 16 girls & 16 guys earned season best marks in the event. Nice work Indians!

The High School Guys rested their top two runners, but still managed a solid 4th place out of 18 teams. Trey Wildenthaler, Austin Koonts, Cory Davis, Caden Sweeney & Jake Sweeney all ran season best times for the boys team.

09/13/16 Watkins Memorial (McGowan Invitational) Results

The Canal Winchester cross country squads competed in their largest invitational of the year this weekend, facing off against a slew of tough D1 competition at Watkins Memorial's McGowan Invitational.

The High School Girls finished 14th out of 23 scoring teams in the D1 Varsity race. Kassidy Pastor (48th, 21:27) and Bethany Hinkle (86th, 22:54) enjoyed season best marks.

The High School Guys finished a respectable 12th of 29 scoring teams in the D1 Varsity race. Ethan Fusek (23rd, 16:56), Gage Baringer (20:45) and Orlando Marsili (21:56) all ran season best times. The final race of the day (High School Open Guys) was stormed out, so unfortunately many members of the guys team were not able to compete.

Both Middle School teams placed well, with the Girls team finishing 8th of 31 teams and the Boys team finishing 11th of 34 in the large school race. Allena Klamorick (5th, 13:05) and Michael McKeon (37th, 12:37) led their respective teams.
