Canal Winchester senior Kayla Scott recently competed in two interstate competitions.

Following the state meet, Kayla was asked to represent Team Ohio at the Mid-East Cross Country Championship in Kettering, Ohio on November 19th. The Mid-East Cross Country Championship is a race where all-star teams of top seniors from Ohio, Illinois, Indiana, and Michigan get a chance to race each other. Kayla ran one of her best races of the year, leading Team Ohio on the muddy and wind-swept course with her 3rd place finish in the field of 42 runners.

11/05/11 All-Ohio! Kayla Scott Takes 7th at 2011 OHSAA State Meet

Congratulations to senior Kayla Scott who earned All-Ohio honors with her 7th place finish at today's OHSAA Division 1 state cross country meet at National Trail Raceway.

The pace was lightening quick from the gun, and Kayla settled into a large pack early, hitting the half mile mark in the midst of a large lead group. Kayla hit the mile marker in 7th place (5:35) then gamely used the second mile to maintain contact with the leaders. Kayla put herself in great position entering the last 1.1 miles, crossing the two mile mark in 5th place (11:43) and making her presence felt in the lead pack of eight. At that point in the race, less than three seconds separated the top eight runners. Kayla was unable to respond to a big surge by the top four runners in the final mile, but she battled the 5th and 6th place finishers to the finish, ultimately crossing the line in 18:20, 16 seconds off the lead pace and less than two seconds off of a top five finish. Kayla's time was the 8th fastest mark of the day, regardless of division.

A large contingent of Canal Winchester fans were present in the National Trail grandstand to watch Kayla receive her medal on the top- fifteen awards podium. Kayla's 7th place finish matches Emily Pifer's program best 7th place finish at the 2008 Division 2 state meet, and she is the first Indian runner to earn All-Ohio status in Division 1. Kayla is the sixth runner in school history to earn top 25 All-Ohio status, joining Emily Pifer (7th), Kaitlin Smith (9th), Penny Boswell (18th), Nick Meidl (22nd), and Cory Irwin (23rd). The Canal Winchester Cross Country program is extremely proud of Kayla for her excellent racing today and for her outstanding senior season. Congratulations Kayla!

10/29/11 Regional Results: Scott 1st Place, Genther 24th Place

Senior Kayla Scott won the Division 1 race at today's Pickerington North regional, earning herself a birth to the state championship next Saturday at National Trail Raceway. Kayla battled stride for stride with runner-up Hannah Hartzell for most of the race before pulling away with a decisive move around the 3 mile mark. Kayla is the first Canal Winchester Cross Country athlete to win an individual regional title, bettering Emily Pifer's previous high finish of 2nd place in the 2008 Division 2 regional final. She will race in the state championship next Saturday, November 5th at 12:30pm.

Senior Jarrod Genther finished 24th in the Divison 1 boys race, missing a state birth by 8 places. Jarrod competed very hard, battling in 20th-25th place for most of the race, but was unable on this day to break the top 16 in the deep and talented field. Jarrod completes his xc career as one of the most accomplished cross country runners in school history. He is a two-time league champion, a three time all-MSL first team selection, a four time all-district selection, and a four time regional qualifier. In 2010, Jarrod became the first men's runner in school history to qualify for the state meet in Divison 1. Jarrod's mark of 15:49 this season is a school record, and his time of 16:18 last year on the Scioto Downs course is the fastest time of any runner in Canal Winchester history. We are all very proud of him and the way he represented his program today and in his career.

Congratulations Kayla and Jarrod!

10/15/11 MSL Champs!!!

The Canal Winchester cross country teams accomplished a big goal for the season, each winning a team title at today's Mid-State League Buckeye Championship. This was the 7th league title in program history for both the boys and girls middle school teams, the 6th league title for the high school boys team, and the 7th league title for the high school girls team (5th consecutive).

Canal Winchester athletes also claimed four individual wins, with Jarrod Genther, Kayla Scott, Wyatt Gardner, and Chloe Palmer each winning their respective races. Jarrod is the fourth CW high school boy in program history to win the MSL Buckeye race, and he joins Scott Wildermuth and Cory Irwin as the only Indian boys high school runners to win back to back league titles. Kayla is the third high school girl to win the race, joining Amy Logsdon in 1986 and Emily Pifer in 2007, 2008, and 2009. Her time of 18:08 set a new course record and her win is part of a remarkable "worst to first" story -- Kayla placed last in the MSL junior varsity race as a freshman in 2008. Wyatt is the fifth middle school boy to win the individual league title and Chloe is the third middle school girl. Chloe's time of 11:57 is a new course and school record. Sophomore Nicole Tennison was also victorious in the junior varsity race, covering the course in 22:14.

The middle school boys had one of their best races of the year, led by two runners in the top five and complimented by a very tight pack from runners #3-5. The team took first place, and many of the middle school boys were awarded red LU Invitational t-shirts for their top 25 efforts.

The middle school girls rebounded in a big way from last week's 3rd place finish, placing all five girls in the top 7 and narrowly missing their lowest score of the year with 19 points. Chloe Palmer won the race individually with a time of 11:31 on the 3000 meter course, and Hannah Hatley's fifth place finish was her highest finish of the year. 09/18/11 Galion Results are In- Girls Finish 9th, Boys Finish 16th

It was a picture perfect day for racing at Ammans Park yesterday afternoon at the Galion XC Festival.

The high school boys team ran a competitive race, but had to settle for a 16th place finish out of 37 teams in the deep D1 field. Jarrod Genther (9th) netted a top 10 finish for the boys team, while Jimmy Fraley (51st) narrowly missed out on a top 50 finish.

The high school girls team managed a solid 9th place finish in the field of 32 teams. Kayla Scott won the prestigious D1 race, taking the lead with a dramatic kick in the final 80 meters. Ali Stauffer finished in the top 60, and the Indian's #3-5 runners maintained a tight spread of only 25 seconds to round out the scoring for the team.

Many Canal Winchester athletes enjoyed breakout performances in the reserve race, including top 50 finishes from Nicole Tennison in the girls race, and Jason Appel and Nick Brady in the boys race.

Not one, but TWO high school 5k records were broken at the meet. Jarrod Genther's mark of 15:49 topped Cory Irwin's 16:08 mark from the same course in 2007. Kayla Scott's mark of 18:04 topped Kaitlin Smith's time of 18:31 set at the Les Eisenhart Invitational (Thomas Worthington) in 2008. Congratulations to Jarrod and Kayla on the accomplishment!

09/11/11 McGowan Invitational Results

The Middle School Girls continued their undefeated season with their most impressive race to date, winning the 19 team large school race by over 30 points. The Lady Indians placed five girls in the top 16 to easily outdistance second place Pickerington Lakeview. Chloe Palmer won the race individually and set a new school record in the process. Chloe's time of 12:08 surpassed the mark of 12:13 set by Whitney McDonald during her undefeated regular season of 2005. Megan Tamasovich finished 2nd individually in a personal record time of 12:49. Congrats on the win Middle School Girls!

The Middle School Boys finished 5th place in the 20 team large school race. The race served as a valuable learning experience for the boys as they competed very well in a loaded, fast-paced field.

The High School Girls ran their best race of the year, finishing 6th place out of 26 teams in the D1 race. Kayla Scott finished 2nd individually, and big season-best performances from Ali Stauffer, Jessica Wheeler, and Elizabeth Kifer propelled the team to a solid finish against many of the teams that the girls will see again in district and regional competition.

The High School Boys performed well despite a pair of ankle injuries and wipe-outs during the varsity race. #3 man Jimmy Fraley and #4 man Dan Williard each ran season bests, helping the team finish 8th place in the 29 team field. The boys saw first-hand the competition they will face as they as they work to improve on last season's 10th place regional finish.

The Reserve Races could best be described as CROWDED! Every reserve race featured massive packs of runners, made more crowded by narrow trails in the woods. The High School Boys Individual Reserve race alone had 454 finishers! Many of our reserve runners managed to fight their way through the masses to finish with personal record performances. 5 of 11 boys and 10 of 13 girls in the high school reserve races earned season-best times.

Great day of racing for Canal Winchester XC!
