10/19/14 District Results: Boys & Girls Finish Sixth, Ethan Fusek Moves On

The high school boys & girls teams raced well at yesterday's district championships, both finishing sixth in races where (unfortunately) only the top five teams advanced to regional competition.

The High School Boys managed their best race of the season, posting a season-best top five average of 17:21. The boys finished sixth out of thirteen teams with 178 points- well behind fifth place St. Charles' 125 points, but a large improvement over last years' 8th place, 252 point performance. Ethan Fusek (13th, 16:36) became just the fourth Canal Winchester male to qualify to regional competition in D1 (since 2009), joining the likes of Jarrod Genther (2009, 2010, 2011), Micah Cobb (2009), and Wyatt Gardner (2012). Luke Schirr (31st, 17:10) & Jason Appel (34th, 17:17) also enjoyed top 35 finishes for the Indians. The boys team ended the season with a record of 84 wins - 40 losses, including victories at the Hamilton Township, Canal Winchester, and Newark Invitationals.

The High School Girls also managed their best race of the season, posting a season-best top five average of 20:27. The girls' sixth place finish (149 points) out of thirteen teams left them 16 points behind fifth place Pickerington North, in what proved to be the most challenging of the three sectional races both team-wise & individually. Joelle Zuberi (20:08, 21st) led the team, missing an individual regional birth by 2 seconds. Five Indians placed in the top 40 for the squad. The girls team ended the season with a record of 109 wins - 18 losses, including victories at the Hamilton Township, Canal Winchester, Circleville, Newark, Piketon, and Johnstown Invitationals. The girls' top five average of 20:27 at the Watkins District ranks them now fifth on the all-time CW girls team list, bettering the 20:32 mark set at Scioto Downs by the 2007 team that finished 12th at the D2 state meet.

Indian runners were very impressive in the Open Races, where 14 out of 25 CW athletes set season best times. Sophomore Ashley Clubb led the way in the girls open race, finishing a "district open" program record 4th place in a personal record time of 20:44. Five girls placed in the top 38 in a race of well over 200 competitors. Freshman Evan Young led the way in the boys open race with a personal record time of 18:32.
