10/27/12 Regional Results- Wyatt Finishes 55th

Freshman Wyatt Gardner finished 55th in today's OHSAA D1 Regional Championship at Pickerington North High School. Wyatt became only the seventh CW athlete to finish in the top 60 at the D1 regional race since the program was classified to Division 1 in 2009. A fantastic contingent of Canal Winchester XC athletes and supporters were on hand to watch Wyatt compete. Wyatt's finish marks the end of the 2012 season for the cross country program. Congratulations Wyatt and thank you to all of our athletes and supporters for another fantastic season!

10/21/12 D1 Central District Championships Results

The boys and girls varsity teams wrapped up the team portions of their schedule yesterday at the Central District Championship meet at Watkins Memorial High School. The varsity boys placed 9th out of 13 scoring teams with 255 points. Wyatt Gardner paced the team with his 12th place finish, high enough to earn All-District honors and advance himself to next week's Regional Championship at Pickerington North High School. Jason Appel placed 32nd place and the boys ended their season on a good note, competing very hard on the rain-soaked, muddy course. Boys results are available here: http://www.watkinstrack.org/CC%202012/District/Dist.Results/DIVI%20Boys%20Section%201.htm

The varsity girls placed 6th out of 14 scoring teams with 143 points, missing out on a top five finish and a regional birth by 8 points. Their performance was one of their best team races of the year. Freshmen Cassidy Long (21st, PR), Megan Tamasovich (22nd), and Chloe Palmer (24th) led the team with with a very tight top pack. All three barely missed out on all-district honors (top 20 advanced to regionals). Seniors Elizabeth Kifer and Taryn Meidl ended their careers on excellent notes, finishing 34th and 42nd respectively. Girls results are available here:

http://www.watkinstrack.org/CC%202012/District/Dist.Results/DIVI%20Girls%20Sec.%201.htm

The open races were full of outstanding performances from both the boys and the girls. Nicole Tennison placed 8th in a field of over 280 runners in a season best time of 21:51. Natalie Tennison (25th), Kasey Pastor (45th), and Sarah Collins (48th) all finished in the top 50 for the girls. Brandon Nichols ended his career with a very good race, placing 98th in a field of over 450 runners. Open race results are not available online, but our athletes' results are available on this spreadsheet:

2012 XC Results

All runners who managed a personal record or a season best on the sloppy course deserve special recognition. Cassidy Long (20:53), Taryn Meidl (21:49), Nicole Tennison (21:51), Natalie Tennison (22:20), Kasey Pastor (22:52), Julie Koffod (23:30) all ran their fastest times of the year yesterday.

Congratulations Indians on a fantastic season and good luck to Wyatt Gardner in regional competition!

10/13/12 Middle School Teams Win League Titles, High School Teams Finish 2nd

Both middle school teams accomplished a big season goal today, winning team titles at the Mid-State League Buckeye Championship meet at Fairfield Union High School. The middle school boys relied again on their tight pack to best Teays Valley by 31 points. The Indians placed 7 runners in the top 10, all seperated by 63 seconds. Jordan Wojciechowski (1st), Ethan Fusek (2nd), Will Morrison (6th), and Anthony Sucan (7th) earned All-League status on the boys side with their top seven finishes. The middle school girls found themselves in a good battle with Circleville throughout the race, but made some key moves down the stretch to come out on top. Ashley Clubb (1st), Hannah Hatley (3rd), and Rowen Stillwell (6th) earned All-League status on the girls side with their top seven finishes. The wins marked the 3rd consecutive (and 8th overall) MSL titles for both the boys and the girls teams. Jordan Wojciechowski became the sixth middle school boy to win an indiviudal league title (Nick Wood, Greg McDaniel, Dan Williard, Justin Emmons, Wyatt Gardner) and Ashley Clubb became just the fourth middle school girl (Hannah Spicer, Whitney McDonald, Chloe Palmer). Congratulations middle school teams!

The high school boys and girls had a roller coaster of a day, enjoying some excellent individual success, but struggling a bit in team scoring. On the boys side, Wyatt Gardner (1st, 16:51) and Jason Appel (3rd, 17:20) earned 1st team MSL status with their personal record finishes. Brandon Nichols rode a season best performance (19:21) to a runner-up finish in the junior varisty race. In all, 8 of 12 boys ran season best times and the team finished 2nd with 58 points, behind Teays Valley (39 points) and ahead of Hamilton Township (69 points). Wyatt Gardner became just the fifth boy in school history to win an individual league title, joining Jeff Irwin (2003), Scott Wildermuth (2004 & 2005), Cory Irwin (2006 & 2007), and Jarrod Genther (2010 & 2011). It is believed that Wyatt is the first freshman boy to win a league title in the 29-year history of the MSL Buckeye. The girls, led by top ten finishes from Cassidy Long (9th) and Elizabeth Kifer (10th), used their depth to hold off Circleville for 2nd place. In all, 8 of 18 girls ran season best times and the team placed five varsity runners under 22 minutes for the first time all season. Nicole Tennison also managed to break 22 minutes in the junior varsity race (21:53), and the JV girls dominated their race with a top seven sweep.

10/07/12 CW XC Claims "Top Program" Honor @ Johnstown Invite

The Canal Winchester Cross Country teams all excelled on a very challenging course yesterday at the Johnstown Invitational held at Infirmary Mound Park. The newly minted course, designed to test racers with its rugged terrain, featured steep hills, rolling fields, and muddy single-track horse trails. And while no CW runner neared a personal record time on the day, they all fared very well against their competition, earning three first-place trophies and one second-place trophy in team competition.

Ashley Clubb, Jordan Wojciechowski, and Wyatt Gardner all won indvidual titles in their respective races and Megan Tamasovich earned a runner-up finish in her race. In total, 25 Canal Winchester athletes won medals for their top-15 finishes.

Canal Winchester athletes were also recognized with the inaugural "Program Award," honoring the program that had the lowest composite score from all four races combined.

Congrats Indians on a job well done!

09/30/12 Successful Day for CW Cross Country at Cambridge Invitational

The Canal Winchester cross country teams all raced very well at yesterday's Cambridge Invitational. The high school girls, middle school boys, and middle school girls all claimed the top spot in their respective team races, while the high school boys placed 3rd out of 10 teams.

The high school girls started the day on a super note with their best team race of the year. Trailing Dover (ranked #6 in D2) by 10-20 points at the 1k mark, the team used a gigantic 2nd mile to claim the lead and hold on for a 4 point win. CW's top five runners gained 16 places over the final 4k, and the team as a whole gained 83 places over that same span.

The high school boys also managed their best team race to date, finishing 3rd with their lowest point total of the year (70 points). The team placed an emphasis on racing tactics, gaining 79 places as a whole over their competitors during the final 4k of the race. Sitting in 6th place at the 1k mark, Wyatt Gardner used a big surge in the second mile to gap his competitors, and held on with a gritty finish down the stretch to earn the first individual win of his career.

The middle school boys won their race in dramatic fashion. Trailing Martins Ferry by 8 points through four runners, CW's fifth and sixth men came up huge for the team. Fifth man Avery Warner (17th) out placed Martin Ferry's fifth man by 8 points to tie the score, and sixth man Anthony Sucan (28th) broke the tie with his strong finish.

The middle school girls won their ten-team race by 25 points, placing five girls in the top 22 and outdistancing Carrollton by a score of 52 to 77. Ashley Clubb (3rd) and Hannah Hatley (6th) both medaled for the team.

Many athletes set season best times on the rolling course, including 18 of our 30 high school runners.

09/23/12 Lancaster & Heath Results- Teams Continue Making Strides

Faced with their best competition to date, the high school teams fared very well at yesterday's Lancaster Invitational. The girls team managed 4th place out of 14 teams in the Division 1 team race, losing only to district rivals Upper Arlington & Westerville North and an out of state squad from Parkersburg, West Virginia. The boys finished ".500" on the day, beating 8 teams and losing to 8 teams with their 9th place finish out of 17. The race served as valuable experience for the squads, giving them their first "up close" look at many of the teams they will race again at upcoming district meet.

Several individuals medaled for the Indians. Nicole Tennison used a fantastic finish to place 7th in the girls open race, while Megan Tamasivich (13th), Cassidy Long (20th), Chloe Palmer (23rd), Taryn Meidl (38th), and Julia Cook (45th) all earned medals in the girls varsity race. Wyatt Gardner led the boys team, earning a 10th place trophy in the very competitive boys varsity race, while Jason Appel also medaled with his 33rd place finish.

The middle school teams competed at two meets this week. On Wednesday, the boys finished first and the girls second at the eight team Heath Invitational. On Saturday, the middle school boys finished 2nd out of 42 teams and the middle school girls finished 8th out of 34 teams at their largest meet of the year, the Lancaster Invitational. Many middle school athletes medaled at the prestigious Lancaster Invite. Ethan Fusek (18th) led the charge for the middle school boys in the team race, and Alex Mattevi (34th) led the way for the boys in the open race. Ashley Clubb (8th) was the top Indian's finisher in the middle school girls team race, and Cami McCoy (11th) was the top finisher for the girls in the open race.

09/14/12 Middle School Teams Victorious at Newark Invitational

The middle school boys and girls teams both won their respective races at yesterday's Newark Invitational.

The middle school boys managed their best score of the year, tallying just 21 points to best the field of seven teams. Jordan Wojciechowski picked up the first individual win of his career and led a 1-2-3 finish with teammates Will Morrison and Ethan Fusek. Overall the boys claimed 7 of the top 11 places in the race.

The middle school girls also managed their best score of the year, winning with a low mark of 23 points. Ashley Clubb enjoyed the highest finish of her career (2nd place), and a steadily improving group of seventh graders sealed the deal with an impressive group effort. 09/08/12 Canal Winchester XC Claims Three Team Titles at Zane Trace

The Canal Winchester XC Teams were all formally introduced to "Agony Hill" this weekend at the Zane Trace Invitational. Faced with a challenging and hilly course, our athletes rose to the occassion and competed exceptionally well.

The middle school girls, middle school boys, and high school girls all claimed team titles at the invite. The high school boys also had a solid day, finishing 4th in the field of 12 teams.

Freshman Chloe Palmer managed to add to the excitment with the first individual championship of her high school career and the first individual championship of the season for any CW runner. Chloe pulled off the victory in the midst of a very bizarre race. Teammate Megan Tamasovich was originally awarded the 1st place trophy after an outstanding performance, but was later disqualified for following a Zane Trace compeitor around an incorrect turn that cut approximately 300 yards off of the course. Moral of the story- Don't assume another runner knows where they are going, even if they are on their home course!

Any high schooler who managed a season best on this demanding two-loop course deserves special recognition. Hats off to the following who ran season best times: Julie Tennison 22:50 (0:15 season best), Natalie Tennsion 23:58 (0:02 season best), Capriona Pafford 26:31 (0:28 personal best), Brittania Hayman 33:48 (4:30 personal best), Robert Moore 19:20 (0:04 personal best), Jamirhan Jackson 19:39 (0:10 personal best), Nick Sweeney 21:04 (0:32 season best), Nate Chiles 29:15 (1:19 personal best)

Congratulations all CW runners for your outstanding effort today!
