Troop 270 participates in numerous service projects throughout the year. Here are some highlights of some of our Service activities.
Troop 270 continues its Memorial Day weekend tradition of traveling to Andersonville National Historic Site and placing flags honoring those who did so much for our country, so that we could be free.
Troop 270 retires worn, dirty, and damaged flags as part of its annual Memorial Day observation. We deconstruct the flags into their components, then burn the pieces in accordance with accepted custom, in a solemn ceremony.
As our former Charter Organization, Cordele First United Methodist Church is very important to Troop 270. We try to work in service to the church whenever we can.
The Troop participates in the Scout Sunday program each year with the Cordele First Church. The guys usually play a big part in the program.
The Scouts present the colors, lead the Pledge of Allegiance, recite the Scout Oath and Law, and normally, pass the offering plate.
We helped pass out water and sports drink to hot and weary runners as they participated in the annual Lake Blackshear Triathlon.
Troop 270 retires flags twice a year. The second service is held on Veterans' Day.
Troop 270 has participated in the ongoing maintenance of the Georgia Veterans Memorial at GVMSP on Lake Blackshear.
Troop 270 has had the honor to serve as the color guard and present the colors at the Georgia Veterans Memorial State Park Veterans Day Service.
Members of Troop 270 operated the canoeing event at the Cub Family weekend at Camp Osborn for several years. They even get to go swimming in November....who'da thunk it.
Troop 270 has helped with the South Georgia Council Webelos Rendezvous each December for a number of years.
Members of Troop 270 have put a lot of sweat equity into Camp Osborn during the camp's annual service days.
Anytime the Troop uses Camp Patten, we try to perform some type of service project.
Several Scouts and Scouters have given their time and effort to help renovate the historic Cordele Boy Scout Hut. The Hut was built in 1940 and has been home to Troop 270 since 1990. It is owned by the City of Cordele.
The Troop has been aided in their efforts by donations from the City of Cordele and Griffin Lumber Company. The renovation began on February 29, 2020.
Hurricane Michael was a devastating event to southwest Georgia. The whole community was without power and water for several days in mid-October 2018. Members of Troop 270 pitched in to help distribute relief supplies, including ice, water, and food.
Troop 270 has supported the Cordele Christmas Parade for many years.
The Troop has supported the Georgia Watermelon Festival Parade.
Cordele Boy Scout Troop supported the "We Ride To Provide K9 Memorial Service" in Porterdale GA on March 7, 2020.
Assistant Scoutmaster Jody Fletcher, the Turner County Sheriff's Office K9 officer organized the Troop's support as one of his Wood Badge tickets. He and ASM David Wade hauled the Scouts safely to and from the Newton County event, a 2.5 hour trip each way.
The event is organized by The Concerned Citizens That Care. The guys help distribute approximately 200 bags of food and turkeys in time for Thanksgiving.
Troop 270 has been a fixture at the National Grits Festival in Warwick. Over the years, we have passed out water during their 5K Fun Run, guiding the runners and offering a refreshing drink, right at the halfway point. Lately, we have directed cars in the event parking lots, presented the colors, and marched in the event parade.

Cordele Boy Scout Troop 270 continued its weekend of service on Saturday, October 31, 2020, helping one of its own with a Hornaday Award project for Eagle Scout Eli Lapeza.
This conservation awards program was initiated in 1914 by Dr. William T. Hornaday, then director of the New York Zoological Park, in an effort to inspire members of the Boy Scouts of America to work constructively for conservation. For twenty years the program was funded through Hornaday's Permanent Wildlife Protection Fund. Upon his death, the program was sponsored for thirty-five years by the New York Zoological Society and named in Hornaday's honor. The award is the oldest conservation award given in the United States.
Cordele Boy Scout Troop 270 continued its weekend of service, sending a contingent to help the Rotary Club with their "All Treats No Tricks" food distribution event. This had us spread pretty thin, as another group of our Scouts were busy at Camp Osborn.

Some of Our Scouts earned service hours by helping park cars at the Georgia Veterans Memorial State Park Barbecue competition.
Troop 270 had the honor of posting the colors at the start of the Lions Club District 18-0 Convention.
Members of the Troop have acted in the Haunted Trails program presented by the Georgia Veterans Memorial State Park for several years. The program is normally held in the weekends leading up to Halloween.
Members of the Troop helped park cars during the annual Christmas in Crisp Arts & Crafts Festival at the Cordele State Farmers Marked. The event is sponsored by the Cordele-Crisp Chamber of Commerce.
Troop 270 at Second Harvest food bank, sorting food for distribution. The food bank serves nine counties, including Crisp. We had a great time and look forward to going back!
Troop members directed vehicle parking at the Cordele Lions Club Fairgrounds during the Hundred Mile Yard Sale.
Troops 270, 3, 13, and 100 assisted at the Georgia Peanut Festival by helping vendors off-load their wares and then operating the inflatable BB range.
Members of Troop 270 assisted the South Georgia Council in recruiting by staffing a 'model campsite" at the Southwest Georgia Regional Fair at the Exchange Club Fairgrounds in Albany.
Troop 270 assisted the South Georgia Council at Frontier Heritage Days at Camp Osborn. The guys handled a variety of activities: manning the entry gate, concession area, recruiting table, directing parking, and cleaning restrooms.
Scouts and Scouters from Troop 270 pitch in to help at Summer Camp. They help raise and lower flags, deliver blessings at meals, help paint signage, work in the dining hall, and teach merit badge classes, among other activities.
Members of Cordele Boy Scout Troop 270, Albany Scouts BSA Troop 13, and Cordele Girl Scout Troop 40274 presented the colors at the Arabi Chicken Cookoff.
Troop 270 set up a recruiting table and talked about Scouting at the Crisp County Community Council's "Community Cafe."
Troop 270 joined Troop 100 at the park in Sylvester to help run the South Georgia Council's BB range and recruit.
Adult Troop Leaders led recruiting efforts at Crisp County Elementary, Primary, and Middle Schools, as well as Crisp Academy.
