Fundraisers
No Bucks, No Buck Rogers
No Bucks, No Buck Rogers
Troop 270 does not charge dues to our Scouts. We hold fundraisers each year to raise money to offset the cost of our activities. Our two main fundraisers are our annual "Send My Butt To Camp" Boston Butt Sale, leading up to Memorial Day, and our "It's Thanksgiving....Butt" Boston Butt Sale at Thanksgiving. Proceeds from the November event will be split between the South Georgia Council and our Scouts. In the past, the Troop has participated in the Council's popcorn sale.
"SEND MY BUTT TO CAMP" BOSTON BUTT FUNDRAISER
This was the brainchild of Assistant Scoutmaster Dr. Chet Lapeza. It has become the main fundraiser for the Troop. For several years now, we have been able to make a contribution to the South Georgia Council from the proceeds.
Held on April 4, 2014. Butts were cooked in Shearer Turton's back yard, then transported to Cordele First Unitd Methodist Church for distribution. The guys sold 142 Boston Butts.
Held on April 3, 2015. Butts were cooked in Shearer Turton's back yard for the second year in a row, then transported to Cordele First Unitd Methodist Church for distribution.
Held on May 20, 2016 in Shearer Turton's back yard, we used four cookers and finished in one day, starting about 5:00 in the morning and finishing about 4:00 in the afternoon.
Held on May 26, 2017 in Shearer Turton's Backyard.
Cooked at Shearer's house for the fifth year in a row. As with the first two years, we started rubbing Butts about 5:00 am and finished around 6:00 pm. This year, we sold 140 Boston Butts.
Our sixth year at Shearer's. The early-morning Butt Rubbing.
Our first year cooking at the Hut and the year it became the "Butt Kickin' Butt Cookin'." Because of Covid, we weren't able to hold our Boston Butt sale in the spring. This event was held December 18-19, 2020. This was our first overnight cooking. The temperature dropped from 40 degrees to 28 degrees overnight.
The guys sold 208 Butts. We were able to cook a few over 180 on Thursday night. We finished the last ones about 6:30 Friday afternoon, over 24 hours later.
In 2021, we sold a Troop Record 384 Boston Butts. Seven smokers are going strong, cooking half the Butts overnight. and the other half during the day on that Friday.
In 2022, we sold 330 Boston Butts and cooked on May 26-27. We cooked 16 Butts on Thursday night, then had nine cookers going, cooking the other 314 during the day on Friday.
We cooked 216 Butts on May 25-26.
This year's Cookin' was held May 23-24. It was our 9th consecutive year holding the event. We cooked 264 Boston Butts over the 24-hour period. This was the first year we had our own cooker. It is made from a 1000-gallon propane cylinder and we found out that it will hold 88 Butts.
For the first time in our Butt Cookin' History, the Troop added a second Cookin' of the year at the Historic Cordele Boy Scout Hut on November 26, 2024. The new event is called the "It's Thanksgiving....Butt Boston Butt Butt Kickin' Butt Cookin'. This year, we sold 128 Boston Butts.
Since we had a relatively low number of Butts, we only used the Troop's cooker and borrowed one from Kenny Calhoun of Vienna. This was our eleventh official Butt Cookin'.
This year, we did our cooking in one day, Friday, May 23. Prep work was completed the evening of May 22. Fires were lit about 4 am and the meat was smoking by 5:15. Enlargement of the end vent/drain holes allowed more air into the cooker, so we were able to have most of the Butts ready by about 2:00
We used three cookers to cook 144 Boston Butts.
SOUTH GEORGIA COUNCIL POPCORN SALE
The Troop has been involved with the Councilwide Popcorn Sale. Beginning at least as far back as 2013, members of the Troop sold popcorn door-to-door. Beginning in 2021, we started selling popcorn in front of local businesses (with their permission, of course). Proceeds are split between the Council and the Troop.
2020 was the last year we sold door-to-door.
In 2021, we did our first point-of-sale event in front of Harveys Supermarket on 16th Avenue.
In 2022, we moved closer 16th Avenue, setting up our table in the Harvey's parking lot.
In 2023, our local Walmart allowed us and Pack 270 to set up at each end of their store. We were there for three Saturdays in September.
In 2024, our local Walmart allowed us and Pack 270 to, once again, set up at each end of their store. We were there on three Saturdays, August 31 through September 14. We sold 42 boxes of Unbelievable Butter, 24 bags of Kettle Corn, and 12 bags of Salted Caramel Corn.
HOTDOG FUNDRAISER AT HARVEY'S SUPERMARKET
On March 31, 2018, the Troop cooked and sold hotdogs at Harvey's Supermarket in Cordele. Harvey's offered us the opportunity and provided us with the hotdogs, buns, and condiments.
