Cordele Boy Scout Troop 270 was founded in October of 1990. It is sponsored by Cordele Kiwanis Club. We meet every Monday night at 6:30pm at the Historic Cordele Boy Scout Hut. Meetings last until 8:00pm. We meet 12 months out of the year. Mr. John Frost has been our Scoutmaster since 2015.
Each meeting starts with the Pledge of Allegiance, the Scout Oath, the Scout Law, and the Outdoor Code, all led by the Senior Patrol Leader. We typically have a time of troop wide instruction, followed by patrol time, and troop games. We conclude each meeting with a Scoutmaster's Minute and a closing prayer.
At a monthly Patrol Leaders Council, the Scouts plan the activities for the upcoming month. All members of the Troop are invited to attend and offer suggestions. Troop 270 is a Boy-Led Troop. At the PLC, we also discuss and plan upcoming camp-outs and service projects.
We go camping on a monthly basis. We go to a variety of places, from state parks to council camporees to favorite spots in the woods, offered up by generous property owners. We have camped in thirty of Georgia's one hundred and fifty-nine counties. We have camped in at least seven other states. While camping, we work on advancement while honing our Scout skills, from Astronomy to Camping, to Cooking, to Forestry to Fishing to Geocaching and beyond!
Troop 270 spends a week every Summer attending summer camp. We have been to camps all over the state. In recent years we have been to Camp Rainey Mountain, Camp Woodruff, Camp Sidney Dew, Camp Bert Adams, and Camp Old Indian, near Traveller's Rest, SC. This year, the Troop voted to return to Camp Old Indian.
We have had attendees at events on the national and international levels. Scouts and adult leaders have attended the 2001, 2005, 2010, 2013, 2017, and 2023 National Scout Jamborees and the 2019 World Scout Jamboree as well.
Troop 270 is very active in Scouting's Honor Society, the Order of the Arrow. A number of our youth and adult members of the Troop are members in good standing with the Withlacoochee Lodge. In addition to regular Troop campouts, members of Troop 270 attend regular Lodge Fellowships, regional Conclaves, and the National Order of the Arrow Conference (NOAC). Our guys participate in lodge-led service projects, ceremony team activities, and boy-led leadership roles. Several of our Scouts have held leadership positions in the Lodge.
Our meeting place is the Historic Cordele Boy Scout Hut. Constructed in 1940 by Mr. W. R. Turner, the Hut has served as a Scouting home for generations of Boy Scouts in Cordele. Hundreds of Boy Scouts and their adult leaders have passed through its doors
The Hut is located at 1101 South 3rd Street in Cordele.
From January 2020 through December 2023, it underwent extensive renovation, replacing termite damaged seals and siding, stabilizing interior walls with plywood siding, the installation of a heating and air conditioning unit for the first time, and receiving a new paint job in 2024.
The Troop would like to thank the City of Cordele, Griffin Lumber Company and Marvair for their support and assistance with this project, as well as numerous individuals who have given of their time and talents.
