LIVE SCOUTING'S ADVENTURE!
Troop 270 prides itself on staying active and being active in the outdoors. We constantly strive to "put the outing in Scouting!" We typically go camping every month. Our Troop also attends a week-long Summer camp every year. Our monthly campouts are typically Friday through Sunday, and can include activities such as fishing, canoeing, hiking, and working on Merit Badges like Camping, Cooking, Fish and Wildlife Management, Forestry, Orienteering, and Astronomy.
Additional pictures from each of the following Outings and Adventures may be found on the Troop 270 Facebook page, located on the web at: https://www.facebook.com/CordeleBSATroop270
Congratulations to Cordele Boy Scout Troop 270 Life Scout Simon Baker, who has completed his Eagle Scout Service Project, four bat houses that have been placed on the city-owned property where the Historic Cordele Boy Scout Hut is located.. The project beneficiary is the City of Cordele.
Bats can consume up to 3,000 insects in a night and can travel up to 60 miles to do so. Simon is overseeing the construction of four bat houses that can house up to 75 bats each.
The Cordele Home Depot donated all of the materials for the project. The bat houses were assembled at the Historic Cordele Boy Scout Hut over three evenings, beginning on August 4, continuing August 30, and finishing up on October 6.
Troop 270 Scouts who assisted Simon were Landon Atkins, Jake Atkins, and Mason Phillips. Adult Scouters who operated the power tools on the project were Scoutmaster John Frost, Assistant Scoutmaster Britt Brinson, Charter Organization Representative David Wade, Troop Committee Members Brady Atkins and Gene Baker, and Troop Committee Chair Terry Fennell. Gene Baker is Simon's daddy. His mother, Nicole, and sister, Doni Rae also showed up to work.
The Eagle Scout Service Project, or simply Eagle Project, is the opportunity for a Scout in Scouting America's Scouts BSA (formerly Boy Scouts) to demonstrate leadership of others while performing a project for the benefit of their community. This is the culmination of the Scout's leadership training, and it requires a significant effort on his or her part. The project must benefit an organization other than the B.S.A., and it cannot be performed for an individual or a business or be commercial in nature. Completing an Eagle Project is a requirement in order for Scouts to attain the Eagle Scout rank.
The South Georgia Council of Scouting America held its annual Camporee at Camp Osborn in Worth County on October 3-5, 2025. Members of Cordele Boy Scout Troop 270 were among 85 Scouts and 37 Scouters, representing 13 Troops from across the Council.
The Scouts competed in six events, all with a Zombie Invasion theme, including Escape Room, Pyromania (fire building), Finding the Tour (GPS), Monster Mash (first aid), Defend the Camp (archery), and Capture the Zombie (knots). Other competitions included the Zombie Themed Lunch Plate, Zombie Dress Award, and Camp Inspection.
Our boys competed hard. The Troop finished tied for First place in the Campsite Inspection and tied for Third place in the Zombie Themed Lunch Plate. The Troop always takes pride in setting up a good campsite.
The Withlacoochee Lodge of the Order of the Arrow, Scouting's National Honor Society, held a Callout ceremony at the end of Saturday night's campfire. First Class Scout Jake Atkins and Troop Committee Member Gene Baker were elected to the order. They will go through an induction weekend in the coming months.
Scouts who attended Camporee 2025 were Simon Baker, Landon Atkins, Jake Atkins, and Mason Phillips. Adult Scouters who attended were John Frost, Britt Brinson, Gene Baker, and Brady Atkins. Mary Phillips and her daughter Melissa came out to camp on Saturday morning to apply Zombie makeup to the boys.
Our recruiting efforts continue. Cordele Boy Scout Troop 270 spent the evenings of October 1-2 at the Central Georgia Fair at the Cordele Lions Club Fairgrounds trying to recruit new members. The Troop would like to thank the Lions Club for allowing us to set up a recruiting table in the main exhibit hall.
Assistant Scoutmaster Britt Brinson and Second Class Scout Mason Phillips greeted fair goers on Wednesday night. They were joined by Charter Organization Representative David Wade on Thursday evening. They weren't able to return during the weekend because of the South Georgia Council Camporee at Camp Osborn, but left their table set up with recruiting pamphlets on the table.
Troop 270 is not only made up of boys from Crisp County. Among our recent Eagle Scouts are Wesley Fletcher, from Turner County, and Laieton Sharp, from Dooly County. Our next Eagle will be Simon Baker, from Wilcox County.
Currently, there are no Scouts BSA Troops in Dooly, Turner or Wilcox Counties. Cordele Boy Scout Troop 270 would like to roll out the red carpet to any boy, ages 11-17, in any of those counties, as well as any such boy in the Warwick area (unless they'd rather ride down to Sylvester and join Sylvester Boy Scout Troop 100).
On Saturday, September 27, we hopefully got the ball rolling in Wilcox County, setting up a recruiting table at the Pitts Fall Festival. Members of Troop 270 joined scores of vendors selling their wares from 10 am until 3 pm. While others sold food or crafts, we were selling Scouting. Our Scouts handed out pamphlets that tell the story of Troop 270 and talked about their experiences in Scouting.
Scouts selling Scouting at the festival were Simon Baker and Mason Phillips. They were joined by Assistant Scoutmaster Britt Brinson and Troop Committee Member Gene Baker.
Camp Osborn held its annual Day of Service on Saturday, September 20, 2025. Members of Cordele Boy Scout Troop 270 and Cub Scout Pack 270 joined at least seven other units, about 40 people all together, in performing service in such tasks as splitting firewood for upcoming events, filling holes around camp structures, cleaning the Order of the Arrow lodge, and staining the fence at the main entrance to the camp.
Pack 270 helped fill holes and cleaned up the OA lodge building. Troop 270 took on the chore of sweeping and staining the fence. While the boys swept dust and loose dirt from the fence, the adults operated power sprayers to apply the stain. The work started about 9 am and finished about 4:30 pm, with about an hour's break for lunch. Camp Osborn Ranger Eric Ginter provided a lunch of hotdogs and chips. The hotdogs were grilled to perfection by Pack and Troop Committee Member Mary Phillips.
Both the Troop and the Pack took advantage of the beautiful weekend weather and camped out on Saturday night. While the temperature reached the low 90s on Saturday, it dropped into the mid 60s, creating some fine sleeping weather.
Troop 270 camped on the ridge in the Guy Ellison campground, where they had installed hammock stations several years ago. The boys cooked a fine supper of marinated and grilled chicken tenders and mashed potatoes. Afterwards, it was showers and bed. Lights our was about 9:30, after a hard day's work. Sunday morning, they packed up, then cooked up bacon and scrambled eggs on the Blackstone griddle.
The Pack camped in the RV area near the horse barn. The Cub Scouts and their leaders ended their day with a 2-mile hike that they needed for advancement, and grilled hamburgers for supper.
Troop 270 members who had a hand in the weekend's activities were Scouts Landon Atkins, Jake Atkins, and Mason Phillips, along with adult Scouters Brady Atkins, Britt Brinson, John Frost, Mary Phillips, and David Wade.
Word went out, asking for the community to get involved in the Homecoming activities for Crisp County High School and our local Scouting units were only too happy to get involved.
The annual Homecoming Parade was held on the afternoon of September 11, 2025. Cordele Boy Scout Troop 270 and Cub Scout Pack 270 held the 22nd position in the line of march. The parade started at the old J. S. Pate school and ended at the old Crisp County High School/Middle School, next to the CCHS football stadium on 24th Avenue.
Following the parade, the group moved over to the parking lot next to the track & field stadium. There, twenty-one vendors had set up what the Homecoming Committee had termed the "Pop-Up Market." The Troop and Pack shared a pop-up tent and table. Other "vendors" sold soap, soul food, barbecue, boiled peanuts, among other things.
While Pack 270 sold popcorn, Troop 270 sold Scouting, passing out recruiting pamphlets to approximately 70 boys. While Pack 270 is actively recruiting boys and girls, ages 5-10, Troop 270 is busily recruiting boys, ages 11-17.
Parade participants from Pack 270 were Jaxon Anderson and his mom Christina; Conor Robbins and his parents/Scout Leaders Shannon and James, Zylus Sinnot and his mom/Cubmaster Abrianna Mitchell, and Erin Skipper, her mom Elizabeth, stepfather Cameron, and sister Chloe.
Troop 270 was represented by Scouts Landon Atkins, Jake Atkins, Mason Phillips and Charter Organization Representative David Wade. Assistant Scoutmaster Britt Brinson helped man the recruiting tent.
Monday evening, August 25 saw Simon Baker leading work on his Eagle Scout project. Members of Cordele Boy Scout Troop 270, working under the direction if Baker, finished the assembly of four bat houses and got them stained. They are now ready for installation.
Bats can travel up to 60 miles a night and consume as many as 1200 mosquit an evening.

Cordele Boy Scout Troop 270 is trying to add new members to our roster. Troop Charter Organization Representative David Wade and Assistant Scoutmaster Britt Brinson stopped by Crisp County Middle School on Friday, August 22 to invite the 6th, 7th, and 8th graders to a fishing rodeo the following day at Camp Osborn. We also talked to the boys about checking out Troop 270 and to the girls about the possibility of helping form a girl Scouts BSA Troop, if there was enough interest.
When we met up with Principal Stacy Stephens to start the mornings activities, we also ran into Crisp County Sheriff Billy Hancock, who had delivered a safety message to the students.
The Scouting pair talked to almost 900 students that morning. In the preceding weeks, we have also visited Crisp County Elementary School, Crisp County Primary School, Crisp Academy, and Fullington Academy.
Troop 270 would like thank Principal Stephens for allowing us to visit with his students. We'd also like to thank him and Assistant Principal Shaun Brown for guiding us to each of the classrooms.
Each month, the Crisp County Community Council hosts a Community Cafe where participants have fun, share a meal, and get important information to help their families.
The August Cafe was sponsored by Crisp Regional Hospital and held at the Sunset Homes Community Center on August 18. A large crowd was present to hear from Dr. Kristen Rischar, one of our local pediatricians, and her office manager, Brandi Wade. They delivered the main program for the evening.
Once the main program was finished, Cordele Boy Scout Troop 270 Scoutmaster John Frost took several minutes to talk about our Boy Scout Troop as well as Cub Scout Pack 270.
Joining Scoutmaster Frost were Scouts Jake Atkins, Landon Atkins, and Mason Phillips. Adult Scouters present were Brady Atkins, Britt Brinson, and David Wade.
Cordele Cub Scout Pack 270 is looking for kids in Kindergarten through Fifth Grade who would like to have fun and learn skills. They meet each Monday from 6:30-7:30 at Cordele First Church, which is located at 302 East 12th Avenue.
Adult Scouters from Pack and Troop 270 spent the morning of August 7 recruiting for Cordele Cub Scout Pack 270 at Crisp County Primary and Elementary Schools. Mary Phillips, a Committee Member for both the Troop and the Pack, was joined by Cordele Boy Scout Troop 270 Charter Organization Representative David Wade and Assistant Scoutmaster Britt Brinson. They were joined by Sam McCord, Assistant Scout Executive and District Executive for the Chehaw District of the South Georgia Council.
The group started the day visiting with Kindergarten through Third-Graders at Crisp County Primary School. Each visited a couple of minutes, with the Scouters telling the kids about how much fun Cub Scouting is. The Primary school visits took a couple of hours to complete. Once done, Brinson and Phillips travelled over to Crisp County Elementary School and visited with the Fourth-Graders. They left flyers for the Fifth-Graders as they want to return in the Spring to recruit for Cordele Boy Scout Troop 270. The group will visit Crisp Academy on Friday, August 8.
Cub Scouts is for boys and girls who are in Kindergarten through Fifth-Grade. Pack 270 will hold a sign-up for kids interested in becoming Cub Scouts on Monday, August 11 at the Crisp County Primary School, beginning at 6:00 pm.
The Pack and Troop would like to thank the administration and staff of both schools for their hospitality.
Cordele Cub Scout Pack 270 meets on Monday evenings at Cordele First Church, located at 302 East 12th Avenue, from 6:30-7:30. If you can't get your kid to the sign-up, just bring them to a regular meeting. The first meeting of the Scouting year will be on August 18.
Life Scout Simon Baker has begun work on his Eagle Scout project, a set of Bat Houses that will be placed on the city-owned property where the Historic Cordele Boy Scout Hut is located.
Bats can consume up to 3,000 insects in a night and can travel up to 60 miles to do so.
Simon is overseeing the construction of four bat houses that can house up to 75 bats each. Work on the project will continue at the next Scout meeting.
Scout Mason Phillips assisted with the project. Scouters John Frost, Gene Baker, Britt Brinson, Terry Fennell, and David Wade also assisted. Simon's mother Nicole and Sister Donnie Rae helped as well.
Cordele Boy Scout Troop 270 held its annual Flint Float in Macon County on Saturday, August 2. Launching from the landing of the last active public ferry in the state of Georgia, the Crisp County contingent paddled to Crooks Landing, about three miles north of Montezuma. The ferry was operated by the Georgia Department of Transportation until 1988.
The original float plan was for the Troop to end up at Hooks landing, which is next to the bridge that crosses the Flint River between Montezuma and Oglethorpe. But Mother Nature had a different idea. A thunderstorm blew in about 3 pm and drove the crew off of the river.
Before exiting the river, the Scouts and Scouters were able to take a couple of swim breaks and eat their lunch on a sand bar. They made a third stop because of the thunderstorm, but made the decision to push on only as far as Crooks Landing.
After exiting the river, the group travelled to the Sportsman's Club on Lake Blackshear to camp for the night. After the boys cooked hamburgers for supper, everyone turned in for the night about 9 pm. Sunday morning, the boys cooked breakfast on the Blackstone....three pounds of bacon and eighteen scrambled eggs. The group also consumed a loaf of white bread. Nothing was left.
Scouts on the kayak trip were Jake Atkins, Landon Atkins, Simon Baker, and Mason Phillips. Scouters on the trip were Brady Atkins, Gene Baker, Mary Phillips, and David Wade. Scout parent Nicole Baker was also on the trip. The crew was delivered and picked up by John Frost, Britt Brinson, and Lee Frost.

Camping, swimming, hiking, merit badge classes....all are part of the fun at Summer Camp.
Members of Cordele Boy Scout Troop 270 attended Summer Camp, just as they have done every year since the founding of the Troop in 1990, with the exception of 2020. This year, the boys traveled to Camp Old Indian, near Travelers Rest, South Carolina, where they spent the week of June 8-14.
Summer Camp gives Scouts the opportunity to work on merit badges and rank requirements, but it is so much more than that. It gives the Scouts a chance to make new friends, travel to some place they have probably never been, experience new adventures, and just have fun.
After arriving at Camp, the Scouts were checked in and given a tour of the Camp. They visited the medical lodge, dining hall, locations for classes, and finally, their campsite for the week, in this case Greenwood. Afterwards, they went over to the Aquatics area for their swim test.
Camp Old Indian offered a variety of merit badges, including Archery, Basketry, Camping, Cooking, First Aid, Forestry, Game Design, Rifle Shooting, and Welding. Cordele Boy Scout Troop 270 held its annual Memorial Day Flag Retirement Ceremony....just a week later than normal. The ceremony is usually held on the evening of Memorial Day, but an evening rain shower caused a postponement until Monday, June 2.
The Troop's Scouts and Scouters spent the evening of Memorial Day preparing flags for retirement. They cut up three large plastic totes full of flag material.
Scoutmaster John Frost opened the ceremony explaining the various ways that flags can be retired. While flags may be buried or cremated whole, Cordele Boy Scout Troop 270 chooses to cut the canton (blue field with the stars) from the stripes, then cut the stripes apart. The canton is left whole, as to cut it up would symbolize separating the Union.
Charter Organization Representative David Wade and Senior Patrol Leader Jacob Frost explained the symbolism related to the cutting of the flag into pieces. Boy Scouts Simon Baker and Mason Phillips, along with Webelos Scout William Bridges and Cub Scout Zylus Sinnot assisted with the flag prep. The Scouts and Scouters were joined by visitors to the event in placing the remnants of the flags into the fire. Troop Committee Members Britt Brinson and Mary Phillips also participated.
Cordele Boy Scout Troop 270 has postponed its annual Memorial Day Flag Retirement Ceremony, due to a steady drizzle on Memorial Day evening.
The ceremony has been rescheduled for Monday, June 2, at 6:30. The public is invited to attend.
In the meantime, the Troop spent Memorial Day evening preparing flags for the ceremony. In the process, they cut up enough flags to fill three large totes.
Cordele Boy Scout Troop 270 is chartered by the Cordele Kiwanis Club.

The Eagle Scout Service Project, or simply Eagle Project, is the opportunity for a Scout in the Boy Scouts of America to demonstrate leadership of others while performing a project for the benefit of their community.

The battlefield, now a state historic park, is located about 15 miles east of Lake City, overlapping Interstate Highway 10 and US Highway 90. Quickly setting up their camp, the guys choked down sandwiches and chips, then headed to the battlefield to watch the reenactment.
After the battle, the guys toured the Union and Confederate camps, where they witnessed a medical demonstration as well as the soldiers cleaning their weapons.
Returning to their own camp, the Scouts and Scouters cranked up the grill and cooked hamburgers for supper. Chips added to the fare. Following their full day of activities, it didn't take long for everyone to find their crib.
Dawn arrived to overcast skies with a threat of rain, which arrived about 10 am, but not before the local crew had a chance to attend morning formation with the reenactors, return to camp, and cook bacon and eggs in their own mess kits over backpacking stoves.
After waiting out the rain, the guys hiked over to the battlefield where they watched the main battle of the weekend. Following the battle, they returned to camp, finished packing their gear and headed back to Cordele.

Camp 3 of the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War wanted to honor Civil War Veterans of the Union Army who settled in a town that would become Fitzgerald, Georgia, by placing GAR markers on their graves. The asked for help from a local group of Civil War Reenactors, the 12th Georgia/26th Wisconsin, and Boy Scout Troops from Fitzgerald and Cordele. The service project occurred on Saturday, January 18.
The City of Fitzgerald was the brainchild of Philander H. Fitzgerald, a Union pension attorney from Indianapolis who sold the idea of a balmy weather colony for northern veterans through his newspaper, The American Tribune. Some 2700 settlers fled mid-western droughts and harsh winters in 1895 to join 600 or more southern veterans in founding a new four-square city amidst the pine barrens of South Georgia.
Members of SUV Camp 3 came down from the Kennesaw, Georgia area. They were joined by other descendants from the SUV Department of Georgia and South Carolina. The GAR markers were originally placed on Union veterans graves by the Grand Army of the Republic (GAR) after the Civil War.
The groups spent a couple of hours on a misty afternoon walking through Evergreen Cemetery pushing the aluminum markers into the ground next to the soldier's headstones. Approximately 120 graves were marked.

The 2024 event was held on Wednesday, November 27. We had a good turnout from our Scouts and Scouters, despite having spent all of the previous day cooking and distributing 128 Boston Butts as part of our "It's Thanksgiving....Butt" Boston Butt "Butt Kickin' Butt Cookin'."
Our Scouts, along with numerous other volunteers helped load 210 hams, bunches of collard greens, and bags of groceries that included rice, corn meal, and corn flakes, into peoples cars. The Scouts and Scouters received many thank yous as the people drove away from the Cordele Lions Club Fairgrounds.

For the last ten years or so, Cordele Boy Scout Troop 270 has held an annual "SEND MY BUTT TO CAMP" Boston Butt Sale. This year, we decided to add a second opportunity for the public to support the Troop's Scouting endeavors. We call it the "IT'S THANKSGIVING....BUTT" Boston Butt Sale.
While the original event is held each May on the Friday before Memorial Day, the new venture was held on November 26, the Tuesday before Thanksgiving.
The Scouts and Scouters of Troop 270 sold 128 Boston Butts, which are actually the shoulder of the hog. The meat was smoked on the Troop's cooker that was made from a 1000-gallon propane cylinder. This was supplemented by a large cooker owned by Mr. Kenny Calhoun of Vienna.
The members of the Troop stayed over after Monday night's Scout meeting and spent the night at the Historic Cordele Boy Scout Hut so they could get an early start on Tuesday morning. The two large cookers allowed the Scouts to do all of their cooking in one day, without having to cook overnight.
The "early start" came about 4am when the adults got the fires going. By 5:00, the boys were rubbing the seasoning on the meat and the adults were placing the pork on the smokers. The last Butt went on the grill at 6:15.
About 10:00, the meat was taken off the grills, wrapped in aluminum foil and put back on the heat. A mid-morning rain shower slowed the cooking down a bit, but some of the Butts were done by 2pm.
As the meat gets done, it is removed from the smoker, put into a foil tray and placed in a big "cooler" to keep them warm. Word was sent out shortly thereafter that some of the Butts were ready for pickup.
An early trickle of customers turned into a rush around 5pm. Many of the Butts went straight from the cooker to someone's floor board. From about 5:30, until about 6:30, when the last Butt came off of our smoker, our customers remained very patient, for which we are grateful.
Cordele Boy Scout Troop 270 would like to thank everyone who purchased a Boston Butt from one of our Scouts or Scouters. We hope you enjoyed your Butt and that it added to your enjoyment of the Thanksgiving holiday.
We hope you'll be willing to support us again around Memorial Day.
Boy Scouts who helped prepare your Boston Butt were Jake Atkins, Landon Atkins, Simon Baker, Gabe Browning, and Jacob Frost. Adult Scouters who gave their time and expertise to the venture were John Frost, David Wade, Terry Fennell, Brady Atkins, and Britt Brinson.

The canoeing events were held on Saturday, November 2. The weather was beautiful, with mostly sunny skies and temperatures in the high 60s to the low 80s.
For the 10th year in a row, Troop 270 directed the canoeing event for the Cub Scouts. This year, they were joined by the guys from Troops 14 and 100. Using pvc pipe and zip ties, the Scouts and Scouters attached two canoes to each other.
When the Cub Scouts and their parents arrived, they were given a safety briefing, outfitted with personal floatation devices (life jackets), and assisted into the canoes. Accompanied by an adult, the Cubs then experienced the fun of paddling around the lake at camp.
When they returned to the dock, everyone was assisted in exiting the canoes and the process started all over again. Kids wishing to go on another trip around the lake got back into line and awaited their turn.

Moving forward, we hope to offer this second Boston Butt Sale instead of trying to sell popcorn. The public has always been very supportive of our original "Send My Butt To Camp" Boston Butt Sale.
In his first act as our new SPL, Jacob Frost led our traditional closing prayer.
Neighbors help neighbors. For the second year in a row, Cordele Boy Scout Troop 270 loaned a hand to our brothers from Sylvester Boy Scout Troop 100.

It is "on same level as the Silver Beaver Award, which is for registered volunteers."
The event was opened by MC Melody Godfrey, of Melody Godfrey Insurance. Britt Brinson, Assistant Scoutmaster of Cordele Boy Scout Troop 270, blessed the evening's meal.
Scouts from Troop 270 presented the colors and Senior Patrol Leader Simon Baker led the attendees in the Pledge of Allegiance. The meal followed the posting of the colors.

Adam Newman, Chief Operating Officer at CE Family, and Mrs. Godfrey introduced the evening's honoree, Sheriff Billy Hancock. The North Star award was presented to him by South Georgia Council Executive Mark Manchester. Sheriff Hancock then spoke and thanked the many people who played a big part in his receiving the award, including his parents and the members of the Crisp County Sheriff's Office.
Sam McCord, Council Assistant Scout Executive talked to the guests about "investing in leadership." He was followed by guest speaker Brigadier General (Retired) Johnathan McColumn who talked to everyone about leadership.
General McCollumn was in the Pentagon on September 11, 2001. He reminded everyone of how the entire country stood together as one on September 12, 2001, but that, sadly, only twenty-three years later, we are just about as divided as we have ever been. He linked that to a lack of leadership.
Sponsors for the event were Buford Farms, Crisp Regional Hospital, Flint Equipment Company, Lawson & Reid Attorneys at Law, Rainwater, Gibbs, & Wright LLP, South Georgia Banking Company, and O'Steen Subaru.
Scouts who presented the colors were Jake Atkins, Simon Baker, Jacob Frost, and Jensen Wade. Adult Scouters attending the event were Scoutmaster John Frost, Assistant Scoutmaster Britt Brinson, Charter Organization Representative David Wade, Troop Committee Chair Terry Fennell, and Troop Committee Members Brady Atkins and Gene Baker.

Cordele Boy Scout Troop 270 went on its first adventure since Summer Camp, way back in June....our annual Flint Float.
Troop 270's Flint Float is a canoe/kayak trip down the Flint River that begins in Macon County at the site of the last river ferry in Georgia and ends, depending on water levels, at Crooks Landing or Hooks Landing.
Crooks landing is about 3 miles north of Montezuma. Hooks Landing is between Montezuma and Oglethorpe. This year's Float ended at Hooks Landing and covered about 15 miles.
With all of the rain we had back in July, the Flint River was several feet higher than it was during last year's Float. There was also a decent current, so the participants didn't have to constantly paddle.
The weather was pleasant. Mostly sunny, it didn't seem like the temperatures reached the forecast high of 96. The group took breaks ever forty-five to sixty minutes or so. Each break lasted about thirty minutes. In all, the eight hour trip included two and a half hours of swim breaks.
After the trip, the guys loaded up their boats and traveled back to Crisp County, where they camped at the Sportsmans Club on Lake Blackshear.
Scouts on the trip were Jacob Frost and Jake Atkins. Adult Scouters were John Frost, David Wade, Britt Brinson, and Brady Atkins.
Scouts and Scouters from Cordele Boy Scout Troop 270 travelled to Albany to attend the Eagle Scout Court of Honor for Sara Frost and five other young ladies from Albany Scouts BSA Troop 13.
Sara, daughter of Troop 270 Scoutmaster John Frost and Treasurer Lee Frost, was awarded the rank of Eagle Scout during her Troop’s Eagle Scout Court of Honor on Monday, August 5, at St. Teresa's Catholic Church in Albany. She is a founding member of Albany Scouts BSA Troop 13, the first all-girl Scouts BSA Troop chartered by the South Georgia Council, Boy Scouts of America. The Troop was chartered by St. Teresa’s in 2019, on the first day that the BSA allowed girls to join what had been known as the Boy Scout program. Scouts BSA is the program for youth ages 11-17.
Troop 270 Scouts who attended the ceremony were Jake Atkins, Landon Atkins, and Jacob Frost, Sara's cousin. In addition to Sara's parents, John and Lee, other adult Scouters from troop 270 in attendance were Brady Atkins, Britt Brinson, Terry Fennell, and David Wade. Former Troop 270 members and Eagle Scouts Reid Brinson, Jack Frost and Michael Frost were also there.
Cordele Boy Scout Troop 270 held its Summer quarter Court of Honor on Monday evening, July 29, 2024, in the sanctuary of the Cordele First United Methodist Church. Senior Patrol Leader Simon Baker opened the ceremony by leading the Troop and their guests in the Pledge of Allegiance, followed by the Scout Oath and Law, as well as the Outdoor Code. Scoutmaster John Frost then assumed the duties of the Master of Ceremonies.
Rank advancement played a big part in the program. Three of the Scouts were awarded new ranks. Two of the three advanced two ranks each. Several Scouts earned merit badges. Those Scouts and Scouters that made the trip to Andersonville National Cemetery in May, for their annual flag placement ceremony, received patches to commemorate the outing. Four Scouts and five adults received their patches for the week they spent at Camp Sidney Dew in June. That group earned Honor Troop recognition at Summer camp.
Every Scout earned some type of award or recognition during the evening.
The highlight of the evening was the presentation of the Kiwanis International BSA Community Organization Award to Charter Organization Representative David Wade. That presentation was made by David Simmons of the Cordele Kiwanis Club.
ASM Britt Brinson followed by updating the audience about the Troop’s upcoming schedule.
The program ended with a closing prayer.
Adult leaders from Cordele Boy Scout Troop 270 attended the weekly meeting of the Cordele Kiwanis Club on Thursday, July 11.
Meeting with the Kiwanians has been discussed for weeks. It was initially hoped that our newest Eagle Scouts might come speak to the Club, but they are off at college. The other boys in the Troop were on family outings.
Scoutmaster John Frost updated the Club members on the Troop's activities. He presented Club President William Hurt a Certificate of Appreciation for the club's support of the local Troop. Following the presentation, Frost answered questions from the attendees.
Troop 270 was represented by Scoutmaster Frost, Assistant Scoutmaster Britt Brinson, Troop Committee Chair Terry Fennel, Charter Organization Representative David Wade, and Troop Committee Member Brady Atkins.

Cordele Boy Scout Troop 270 earned "Honor Troop" recognition after a busy week at Summer Camp. The Troop spent the week of June 9-15, 2024 at Camp Sidney Dew, near Armuchee, Georgia, about 25 miles north of Rome.
Four boys and five adults attended camp this year. The Scouts were Jake Atkins, Landon Atkins, Dalton Baker, and Simon Baker. The adults on the trip were Brady Atkins, Gene Brady, Britt Brinson, Terry Fennell, and David Wade.
The boys worked on numerous merit badges, including Animal Science, Animation, Astronomy, Camping, Canoeing, Chemistry, Chess, Citizenship in the World, Communication, Disabiities Awareness, Farm Mechanics, First Aid, Geology, Leatherwork, Photography, Reptile & Amphibian Studies, Scouting Heritage, and Swimming. They worked on some of thier rank advancement requirements.
In addition to going to classes, the boys were part of the color guard leading the flag-raising ceremony one morning. Scout Dalton Baker also delivered the Blessing before supper one evening. Both of those items helped the Troop earn the Honor Troop designation.
While the boys were busy going to classes, performing their own service, and having fun, the adults were busy helping out with various projects. Our Scouters performed 13-19 hours of service each during the week. In addition to wrangling Scouts, they helped:
* create a M*A*S*H*-line sign-post sign for the Camp Ranger
* removed a yucca plant that was blocking a trail
* painted more than a dozen campsite signs
* taught a Fire Safety merit badge class
* helped wash dishes one morning in the dining hall
* branded mugs for other campers one evening
Senior Patrol Leader Simon Baker received the Honor Troop streamer from Camp Commissioner Jacob Davis during the closing campfire on Friday evening. It will be displayed at the top of the Troop color staff with the Troop flag.
Cordele Boy Scout Troop 270 holds flag retirement ceremonies twice a year, Memorial Day and Veterans Day. The ceremony, scheduled for Memorial Day, had to be postponed due to inclement weather. The annual Memorial Day Flag Retirement ceremony was held this year at the Historic Cordele Boy Scout Hut on Monday, June 3.
As patriotic music played in the background, this years ceremony started with a discussion about the meaning of the flag, including what the colors, stars, stripes, and canton mean. The Scouts then cut up a flag for proper disposal. You see, it is improper to burn a flag, but if you cut it into pieces, so that it is no longer a flag, you can burn the parts. The one thing that is not cut into pieces is the canton, the blue field with the stars. It is burned intact, because to cut the stars apart would symbolize cutting apart our Union.
After the flag was cut into pieces, those pieces were reverently placed on the fire. Once that flag was placed in the fire, other pieces of flags that had been previously cut up were placed on the fire. In all, we retired several dozen flags.
If you have a flag that needs to be retired, please bring them by the Historic Cordele Boy Scout Hut and place them in the flag drop box that is in front of the Hut.
Scouts who participated in the ceremony were Jake Atkins, Landon Atkins, Dalton Baker, Jacob Frost, and Jensen Wade. Scouters who helped were Scoutmaster John Frost, Assistant Scoutmaster Britt Brinson, Troop Committee Chair Terry Fennell, and Troop Committee Member Brady Atkins.
Cordele Boy Scout Troop 270 is chartered by the Cordele Kiwanis Club. The Troop meets on Monday evenings from 6:30-8:00.
The Historic Cordele Boy Scout Hut, which was built in 1940, has finally gotten a new paint job.
This is the culmination of a project that has lasted more than three years. All of the work was performed by volunteers. Previously, the termite damaged rear seal and exterior siding were replaced, rafters were reinforced, and interior walls were covered with plywood.
Cordele Boy Scout Troop 270 would like to thank the City of Cordele and Griffin Lumber Company for their support and assistance with this project, as well as numerous individuals who have given of their time and talents.
The finishing touches to the exterior of the Hut were provided by Troop Committee Chair Terry Fennell, his son Tyler Fennell, and Assistant Scoutmaster Britt Brinson. Sprayers were provided by Brinson and Scoutmaster John Frost.
Sara Frost, daughter of Troop 270 Scoutmaster John Frost and Troop Treasurer Lee Frost, completed her Eagle Scout Project on June 1, 2024. She is a member of Scouts BSA Troop 13 in Albany. Troop 13 is an all-girl Troop, chartered by St. Theresa's Catholic church, in Albany. They also charter the all-boy Troop 3.
Sara's Project is two benches that will be placed at the Arabi Walking Track. She was assisted on the project by Scouts and Scouters from Troops 3, 13, and 270. The work on the benches was performed at the Historic Cordele Boy Scout Hut.
Members of Cordele Boy Scout Troop 270 who helped were Jake Atkins, Landon Atkins, Simon Baker, Jacob Frost, and Jensen Wade. Local adults who pitched in were Scoutmaster John Frost, Assistant Scoutmaster Britt Brinson, Troop Committee Chair Terry Fennel, Charter Organization Representative David Wade, and Troop Committee Members Brady Atkins and Gene Baker.
Upon completion of her Eagle Scout Board of Review, Sara will join her brothers Jack and Michael Frost in earning the coveted rank of Eagle Scout.
Cordele Boy Scout Troop 270 joined a couple of hundred other Scouts, and just regular people, to help place flags on the graves of over 20,000 veterans of America's armed forces during the annual Memorial Day Flag Placement ceremony at Andersonville National Cemetery on Saturday, May 25, 2024.
Every grave is decorated with an American flag, except for the six ringleaders of a group of Union soldiers from the Civil War that preyed on their fellow prisoners. Confederate Captain Henry Wirz armed a group of prisoners known as the Regulators with clubs and allowed them to round up the Raiders and try them. The six ringleaders were hanged and buried separately from the rest of the prisoners.
The Troop has made the trek to the Cemetery in Macon County every year, except for 2020, since at least 2009. Starting at 9:00 in the morning, the group was finished in about an hour. Afterwards, everyone was treated to a meal of grilled hotdogs, chips, beans, cookies, and drinks by the Dixie Crows.
Troop 270 Scouts who participated in the event were Simon Baker, Jacob Frost, and Jensen Wade. They were joined by Scoutmaster John Frost, Assistant Scoutmaster Britt Brinson, Charter Organization Representative David Wade, and Troop Committee Members Gene and Nicole Baker. Their daughter, Doni Rae also helped.
Cordele Boy Scout Troop 270 is chartered by the Cordele Kiwanis Club and meets each Monday evening, 6:30-8:00 at the Historic Cordele Boy Scout Hut, located at 1101 South 3rd Street in Cordele. If you know of a young man, ages 11-17 who might like to "Live Scouting's Adventure" or might benefit from the leadership and service opportunities offered by the Scout program, please bring him by the Historic Cordele Boy Scout Hut on Monday evening.
Due to inclement weather, Troop 270's annual Memorial Day Flag Retirement Ceremony could not be held on May 27. It has been postponed until Monday, June 3. The public is cordially invited to attend. The ceremony will begin at 6:30 pm at the Historic Cordele Boy Scout Hut.
Cordele Boy Scout Troop 270 ended its "Send My Butt To Camp" Boston Butt Sale with the annual Butt Kickin'Butt Cookin' at the Historic Cordele Boy Scout Hut on Thursday and Friday, May 23-24, 2024. In the end, we were able to sell and cook 264 big old chunks of pork.
The Scouts started rubbing seasoning on the Butts about 6:30 Thursday evening. The Troop's cooker, made from a 1000-gallon propane cylinder, was loaded with 88 Butts by 7:00 pm. The Scouts and Scouters started wrapping the meat in aluminum foil about 11:00 pm. Returning a few hours later, they took the Butts off of the cooker and placed them in pans, then into coolers well before sunrise. Then the process began all over again.
The Troop would like to thank everyone who played a part in the success of the event, starting with our customers. Without your support, there would have been no point in cooking.
We'd also like to thank the folks who loaned us cookers. Even though we have a new cooker that held 88 Boston Butts when we started cooking Thursday night, we still had another 176 to cook on Friday. There is no way that we could handle that with our cooker alone. Thank you to Kenny Calhoun, Kris Herrick, Tommy Stewart, and Bobby Wade for the loan of their cooking equipment.
Of course, we had to have something to cook. A big Troop 270 thank you goes to Brad Stephens, owner of the Vienna Piggly Wiggly for supplying us with the meat.
We hope all of you will help us out again next year. It looks like next year's Butt Kickin' Butt Cookin' will be on May 22-23, 2025.
Cordele Boy Scout Troop 270 held its Spring quarter Court of Honor on Monday evening, April 29, 2024, in the sanctuary of the Cordele First United Methodist Church. Senior Patrol Leader Simon Baker opened the ceremony by leading the Troop and their guests in the Pledge of Allegiance. After asking the guests to be seated, he led the Scouts in the Scout Oath and Law, as well as the Outdoor Code. With Scoutmaster John Frost out of town on business, Assistant Scoutmaster Britt Brinson assumed the duties of the Master of Ceremonies.
Before commencing the awards portion of the ceremony, ASM Brinson and Charter Organization Representative David Wade reminded those in attendance about upcoming activities for the Troop.
Two of the Scouts were awarded new ranks. Several Scouts earned merit badges. Those Scouts and Scouters that made the December trip to the USS Yorktown aircraft carrier back in December received patches to commemorate the outing. Others received a cold-weather camping patch for the campout in Terrell County back in February when, for the second time this year, the guys camped in 31-degree weather. Those that attended last weekend’s Merit Badge University (MBU) received a patch for that event.
The South Georgia Council of the Boy Scouts of America held its annual Merit Badge University at Camp Osborn in Worth County over the weekend of April 26-28, 2024. Seven youth members and five adults from Cordele Boy Scout Troop 270 joined over 300 other Scouts and Scouters representing nine Councils and three states at the event.
While many of the Scouts worked on up to three merit badges each during the weekend, thirty-six of the newest Scouts participated in a program called Trailblazer. The Trailblazer program, which was headed up by the adults from Troop 270, helped the new Scouts complete many of the requirements they need to earn the ranks of Scout, Tenderfoot, Second Class, and First Class. The local Scouters were assisted by adults from other Troops in the Council.
Local Scouters who helped deliver the Trailblazer program were Scoutmaster John Frost, Assistant Scoutmaster Britt Brinson, Charter Organization Representative David Wade, and Troop Committee members Brady Atkins and Gene Baker.
Scouts Jake Atkins and Riley Herrick were among the thirty-six Scouts who participated in Trailblazer. While that was going on, Scouts Landon Atkins, Dalton Baker, Simon Baker, and Jacob Frost worked on such merit badges as Chemistry, Citizenship in the Nation, Citizenship in the World, Electronics, Fishing, Genealogy, Leatherwork, Nature, and Reptile and Amphibian Study. Forty-five merit badges were offered during the weekend.
Life Scout Jensen Wade, who is closing in on his Eagle Scout rank showed up on Saturday to help with the Trailblazer program and supper.
Troop 270 would like to thank all of the adults that gave their time to teach merit badges and the Trailblazer program.
If you know of a boy, ages 11-17, who might like to "Live Scouting's Adventure" or would benefit from the leadership and service opportunities offered through the Scouts BSA program, please have him come by the Historic Cordele Boy Scout Hut any Monday evening from 6:30 to 8:00. Troop 270 is sponsored by the Cordele Kiwanis Club.
The Withlacoochee Lodge of the Order of the Arrow sent 35 members (Arrowmen) to the Section E6 Conclave at the Gerald Lawhorn Scout Base, about twenty minutes west of Thomaston, GA. Three of the Arrowmen were members of Cordele Boy Scout Troop 270, Scout Simon Baker and Scouters Britt Brinson and Terry Fennell.
Section E6 is made up of eleven lodges. The Conclave ran April 19-21, 2024. The annual Conclave is a gathering of all of the lodges. It is hosted on a rotating basis by each Lodge. The theme for this year's Conclave was "Conclave in Paradise."
The Order of the Arrow is Scouting's National Honor Society. It was founded in 1915. The OA recognizes Scouts and Scouters who best exemplify the Scout Oath and Scout Law in their daily lives.
Over 600 Arrowmen attended this year's Conclave. Next year's Conclave will be held at Bert Adams Scout Camp just south of Covington, GA. The Withlacoochee Lodge last hosted Conclave in 2021 at Camp Patten, in Lanier County.
Warwick held its annual National Grits Festival on April 13, 2024. The organizers asked Cordele Boy Scout Troop 270 to direct vehicle parking at three of their parking lots that were closest to the activities.
The Troop was glad to help, as we have done so for several years. And boy, we were busy, as beautiful weather brought out the crowds.
The festival was due for some nice weather. The last few years saw cool and wet to cold weather that held the crowds down. This years event saw about 50 vendors.
Scouts from Troop 270 who helped at the event were Jacob Frost, Riley Herrick, Cody Ngo, Benjamin Nipper, and Jensen Wade. Adult Scouters who volunteered their time were Scoutmaster John Frost, Charter Organization Representative David Wade, Troop Committee Chair Terry Fennell, Assistant Scoutmaster Britt Brinson, and Troop Committee Member Gerry Nipper.
If you know of a boy, ages 11-17, who might like to "Live Scouting's Adventure" or would benefit from learning leadership techniques and how to serve others, please have him drop by the Historic Cordele Boy Scout Hut on any Monday evening from 6:30 to 8:00. The Hut is located at 1101 South 3rd Street in Cordele.
The Withlacoochee Lodge of the Order of the Arrow held its annual Spring Fellowship and Ordeal at Camp Patten in Lanier County on April 5-7, 2024. Several members of Cordele Boy Scout Troop 270 attended the event.
Two youth members of Troop 270 completed membership requirements for the Order. Jacob Frost completed his Ordeal to become a member of the Lodge. Simon Baker confirmed his membership by completing the requirements for Brotherhood.
The Order of the Arrow is Scouting's National Honor Society for campers administered through the Boy Scouts of America. It is also known as the "brotherhood of cheerful service."
To be inducted into the Order of the Arrow, a Scout must:
* Be at least First Class rank.
* Have at least 15 nights of camping, including a 6-day long-term
camp.
* Participate in the "Ordeal" and induction ceremony, after
election by his Troop.
* Be a registered member of the Boy Scouts of America.
* Have experienced 15 nights of Scout camping while registered
with a troop, crew, or ship within the two years immediately
prior to the election.
The induction ceremony, called the Ordeal, is the first step toward full membership in the Order. During the experience, candidates maintain silence, receive small amounts of food, work on camp improvement projects, and sleep apart from other campers. The entire experience is designed to teach significant values. All candidates for membership must complete the Ordeal.
After 6 months of service as an Ordeal member and fulfilling certain requirements, a member may take part in the Brotherhood ceremony, which places further emphasis on the ideals of Scouting and the Order. Completion of this ceremony signifies full membership in the Order.
Scoutmaster John Frost also camped for the weekend. His daughter Sara, a member of Scouts BSA Troop 13 in Albany, also completed her requirements for Brotherhood. Troop Committee Chair Terry Fennell and Assistant Scoutmaster Britt Brinson arrived on Saturday and attended the Ordeal and Brotherhood induction ceremonies.
Congratulations to Simon, Jacob, and Sara.
Troop 270 was supposed to spend the weekend of March 23-25 on the Georgia coast, camping on Creighton Island. Rain was forecast for the entire weekend causing a change of plans.
To provide an opportunity to do something, a quick decision was made to attend a hockey game in Macon on Friday. Being short notice, the turnout wasn't great, but family members helped round out a decent crowd.
Senior Patrol Leader Simon Baker, Assistant Scoutmaster Britt Brinson, and Troop Committee Member Gene Baker were joined on the outing by Nicole and Doni Rae Baker, who are trying to form an all-girl Scouts BSA Troop, along with Marilyn and Reid Brinson.
The Macon Mayhem lost to the Pensacola Ice Flyers by a score of 6-1. Despite the final score, everyone enjoyed the game. A highlight of the evening was Troop 270 being recognized on the Coliseum scoreboard.
Adult leaders for Cordele Boy Scout Troop 270 conducted the first cooking test for the Troop's new grill, which was constructed from a 1000-gallon propane cylinder. The test entailed smoking 20 chicken halves and two pounds of bacon.
The purpose of the test was two-fold. First, we wanted to see how well the grill cooks. Does it get enough air? Does it maintain constant heat? The second reason for the test was to season the cooker.
Both tests were successful. The chicken halves were smoked in about an hour and a half. The bacon (our late-morning snack) was done in about thirty minutes. The combination of bacon and chicken fat did a great job seasoning the grates.
We are now about nine weeks out from our "Butt Kickin' Butt Cookin'," the culmination of our annual "Send My Butt To Camp" fundraiser. Tickets will be available beginning April 29.
Troop 270 will be attending Summer Camp at Camp Sidney Dew, near Armuchee, Georgia, north of Rome. The cost for Camp this year is $350 per Scout. The Boston Butt sale helps offset this cost.
For such an relaxing weekend, our local Boy Scouts spent an eventful few days in an area they had never camped in. The campout occurred on February 23-25, 2024.
Cordele Boy Scout Troop 270 held its first ever campout in Terrell County, on Mr. Bob Atkins property, along Ichawaynotchaway Creek, about nine miles west of Dawson.
The property is the likely site of the Battle of Echowanotchaway Creek which was fought on July 25, 1836. During the Creek Indian Uprising of 1836, about 300 Creek Indians were passing through Terrell County, on the way to Florida, to link up with the Seminoles. They were pursued by 132 Stewart County militia, after burning the town of Roanoke.
The militia, under Major R. W. Jernigan, caught up with them along Ichawaynotchaway Creek. A sharp fight ensued, that lasted about an hour. The Indians retreated, leaving 18 dead. Three of the militia were killed in the battle.
Scout leader Brady Atkins set up the campout. The Troop arrived about 9:00 on Friday night and quickly set up Camp, some in tents, some in hammocks, one even on a cot in the woods. It was a clear, cool evening, with the temperature dropping down to about 38 degrees. The night was bright, with an almost full moon.
Saturday morning dawned clear and bright. During breakfast, the Troop helped celebrate the thirteenth birthday of Scout Cody Ngo. After breakfast, the guys went on a short hike around the property. Back from the hike, the boys and some of the adults had an impromptu football game. Everyone broke for sandwiches and chips about halfway through the game.
Near 4:00 pm, the group loaded up for a trip to Andersonville National Historic Site for a candlelight program commemorating the 160th anniversary of the opening of Camp Sumter, better known as Andersonville Prison. Park Staff and volunteers offered living history vignettes of life as prisoners and guards on the first day of the prison. The Crisp County contingent also toured the museum to learn about America's prisoners of war from throughout our history. Cody's parents showed up at the park with a birthday cake, just as the Scouts were heading back to camp, so the birthday party continued just a while longer.
The Troop returned to camp about 9:30, completely exhausted, and went straight to bed.
A full moon shone down on the camp as the temperature dipped to 31 degrees, allowing the campers to earn another cold weather camping patch, their second since the first of the year.
Sunday was another beautiful day. After a late breakfast, Life Scout Benjamin Nipper conducted a "Scouts Own" church service. Following the service, the Troop packed up and returned to Cordele.
Scouts on the trip were Landon Atkins, Jake Atkins, Simon Baker, Cody Ngo, and Benjamin Nipper. They were joined by Scouters Brady Atkins, Britt Brinson, Terry Fennell, Gerry Nipper, and David Wade.
If you know of a boy, ages 11-17, who might like to "Live Scouting's Adventure" and would benefit from a program that teaches leadership and service, please bring him by the Historic Cordele Boy Scout Hut any Monday evening, 6:30-8:00. The Hut is located at 1101 South 3rd Street in Cordele. Troop 270 is chartered by the Cordele Kiwanis Club.
The Cordelia Lodge #296 of the Free and Accepted Masons honored Cordele Boy Scout Troop 270’s two most recent Eagle Scouts by presenting them with the Masonic Eagle Scout Award. The award is presented on behalf of the Grand Lodge of Georgia. The ceremony was held on February 20, 2024.
Eagle Scouts Wesley Fletcher and Korey Watts were invited to supper at the Masonic Hall in Cordele, along with their families. Following the meal, District Deputy to the Grand Master Tommy Kimbrel presented the distinctive medals and certificates to the Scouts.
The presentation is normally made during the Eagle Scout Court of Honor, but a holdup with one of the applications caused a delay in getting the medal, so the Masons decided to host both of the Scouts and their families during a special program at the Masonic Hall.
Wesley Fletcher was joined by his parents Beth and Jody, along with his brother Wren. Korey Watts was joined by his mother, Samantha Mumphery, and her parents Sam and Fannie Mumphery. Scoutmaster John Frost and Charter Organization Representative David Wade also represented the Troop at the event.
The Scouts and Scouters of Troop 270 would like to thank the members of the Cordelia Lodge, F&AM for their continued support of the Troop.
We have a new resident at the Historic Cordele Boy Scout Hut. After an odyssey of more than two years, our new cooker has returned home.
Cordele Boy Scout Troop 270 has been cooking Boston Butts for the “Send My Butt To Camp” fundraiser for at least 8 years, with proceeds going to offset our Scouts expenses for Summer Camp and other outings. Each year, we have been blessed to have good friends of the Troop loan us their smokers/cookers. Some years, we’ve borrowed as many as nine grills.
This year, we’ll have a cooker of our own to supplement the loaners. A couple of years ago, Assistant Scoutmaster Britt Brinson was talking with a friend, Kenny Watson, who was the Ranger at Camp Patten at the time. Kenny had just purchased a propane tank to convert into a smoker, so Brinson asked if he could get him one, preferably a 1000-gallon cylinder. Kenny came through and Brinson purchased the container to donate to the Troop.
Work started in earnest in January 2022. A lot of people have had a hand in the project. Among the many who contributed were Justin Bailey, Britt Brinson, Terry Fennell, Jody Fletcher, John Frost, Jake Kelley, Jim Maxey, Bobby Wade, David Wade, Jensen Wade and Kenny Watson.
The Troop has also been blessed with good friends who purchase tickets for our fundraisers. Our Scouts will start selling tickets for our “Send My Butt To Camp” Boston Butt Sale after April 29, 2024. The Sale will run through May 20. We will start cooking the meat on Thursday evening, May 23. Customers may pick up their purchase on Friday, May 24 at the Historic Cordele Boy Scout Hut, located at 1101 South 3rd Street in Cordele.
Cordele Boy Scout Troop 270 held an Eagle Scout Court of Honor for Korey Watts on Saturday, February 17, 2024, at the Cordele Community Clubhouse. Korey is the son of Samantha Mumphery of Cordele and Michael Watts, Sr. of Tifton. He is the grandson of Mr. and Mrs. Sam Mumphery of Cordele and the late Mr. and Mrs. Alex Watts of Tifton. Korey is the 34th Eagle Scout from Troop 270 and 74th Eagle Scout from a Crisp County Troop.
Senior Patrol Leader and Eagle Scout Wesley Fletcher opened the ceremony by asking the audience to stand for the presentation of the colors and join in the Pledge of Allegiance. He had the Color Guard post the colors on either side of the fireplace. He then invited Dr. Annette Mumphery, Korey’s aunt, to deliver the invocation, before introducing Charter Organization Representative David Wade as the Master of Ceremonies.
MoC Wade delivered opening remarks before introducing Troop Committee Chair Terry Fennell, who declared the Court of Honor “Opened.” Wade then introduced Scoutmaster John Frost, who outlined Korey’s long trail to the rank of Eagle Scout. He was assisted in this undertaking by Troop 270 Boy Scouts Landon Atkins, Simon Baker, Jacob Frost, Benjamin Nipper, and Jensen Wade, along with Jake Atkins from Cordele Cub Scout Pack 270.
Scoutmaster Frost ended this portion of the ceremony talking about Korey’s Eagle Scout Project, a bench that will be placed near the playground in Turner Park, near 24 th Avenue in Cordele.
MoC Wade then introduced Troop 270 Assistant Scoutmaster and Eagle Scout Britt Brinson, who described Korey’s Eagle Scout Board of Review process, before giving the Eagle Scout Charge to Korey and other Eagle Scouts in attendance, to which they pledged their “sacred honor.”
Wade then had Scoutmaster Frost come back up to present the Eagle Scout Award to Korey, who was joined by his parents. Frost had Samantha Mumphery pin the Eagle Scout medal on her son. Korey then presented the Eagle Scout Mom pin to her and the Eagle Scout Dad pin to Michael Watts, Sr. Frost followed that up by presenting Korey with his Eagle Scout neckerchief and slide.
David Wade returned to the podium and presented Eagle Scout Korey Watts to the assembled crowd and asked him if he’d like to say anything to the crowd. Korey thanked everyone who had a part in making him the young man he has become, especially his mom. He then presented Mentor Pins to Scoutmaster Frost, Assistant Scoutmaster Brinson, Troop Committee Chair Fennell, and Crisp County High School Band Directors Dominic Lane and Jerady Castro. He next presented Grandparent pins to each of his surviving grandparents.
Cordele City Commissioner Vesta Beal Shephard recognized Korey’s accomplishment, on behalf of the City Commission, with a proclamation from the city. David Wade presented Korey with a letter and certificate from Brigadier General (Retired) David Estes, representing the Military Order of the World Wars.
MoC Wade declared the Court of Honor “Closed.” SPL Fletcher asked Dr. Mumphery to deliver the benediction. Fletcher brought the program to a close by having the Color Guard retire the colors and invited the attendees to join the family for refreshments.
Korey Watts began his Scouting career with Cordele Cub Scout Pack 270, before crossing over to Cordele Boy Scout Troop 270 in 2017. During his time with Troop 270, he has earned 30 merit badges and a bronze palm. Palms are awarded for every five merit badges above the 21 required for Eagle. He is a Brotherhood member of the Withlacoochee Lodge of the Order of the Arrow, Scouting’s National Honor Society. Korey served as Lodge Secretary in 2020. Boy Scout Troop 270 held its annual Veterans Day Flag Retirement Ceremony at the Cordele Boy Scout Hut on Monday, November 13.
Members of the Troop retired dozens of flags tonight. During the program, Scoutmaster John Frost and Scouts Wesley Fletcher and Landon Atkins read from a script that describes the meaning of the various parts and colors of the flag.
As most people know, the stars represent each state in the Union. The thirteen stripes symbolize the thirteen original colonies that became the United Stated of America. The colors also have meaning. Red stands for hardiness and valor. White signifies purity and innocence. Blue represents vigilance, perseverence, and justice.
Most services use fire to retire a flag. Troop 270 cuts the flags into pieces, so that it is no longer a flag, then burns the pieces. The one part that does not get cut is the blue canton with the stars. Cutting the canton would represent separating the Union, something that we do not want to ever see happen.
Scouts participating in tonight's ceremony were SPL Wesley Fletcher, Landon Atkins, and Korey Watts. Adult Scouters were SM John Frost, Assistant Scoutmasters Britt Brinson and David Wade, and Troop Committee Chair Terry Fennell.
