WHAT: Appreciate how search results are selected and ranked

HOW:

Activity 1

  1. Think of 5 obscure questions (questions that people wouldn't normally know the answer to)
  2. Get a partner to do the same and swap (skip this step if you don't have a partner)
  3. Find the answers to the obscure questions

The challenge is to not use Wikipedia for your answer

Activity 2

Now answer the following questions:

  1. What is a Web Browser and which one did you use for your searches?
  2. What is a Search Engine and which one did you use?
  3. How do Web crawlers work?
  4. What is Indexing?
  5. What Keywords did you use for your search?
  6. How many Search Results were there?
  7. What is a Ranking Algorithm?
  8. What is a Ranking Factor?

Activity 3

  1. Search for “Theme Park” on 2 different search engines.
  2. What are the top 5 websites from each search engine?
  3. Are they different? If so, why do you think this might happen?

Re-visit your answers from Activity 2 and check that you have answered them correctly.

Evaluate two different search engines, judging them on their effectiveness when searches are carried out.

CLASSROOM IDEAS:

Play a search term version of charades with the class.

Students must come up with keywords to use for a search that aren't the ones on the card.

E.g. Alton Towers

Students must find the alton towers website without using the words Alton or Towers
