WHAT: Understand and use Boolean logic in circuits

HOW:

Activity 1

Open this website:

http://www.neuroproductions.be/logic-lab/

You will need to have flash player installed for this to work properly.

Activity 2

Use the INPUTS, LOGIC PORTS and OUTPUTS to create some simple circuits. You can see some ideas in the video below:

Activity 3

Create a presentation that clearly shows how to get a fan working with each of these logic ports:

Basic Ports:

  • AND
  • OR
  • NOT

Challenge Ports:

  • NOR
  • NAND
  • XOR
  • XNOR

Activity 4

By now, you should be more aware of the different logic ports and how they work. Link more than one logic port together to create a circuit.

Be as creative as you like. A simple example can be seen below:

Making a game in the Logic Lab

It is possible to make a game using logic lab. By using trial and error you will realize that some of the outputs display different colours, letters and numbers depending on the type of inputs and ports that have been used.

Make a really complicated circuit using multiple logic ports and inputs. The challenge for the user will be to make a certain letter or colour appear when they switch on the correct inputs.

CLASSROOM IDEAS:

Hand out some giant playing cards to each student in the class. There should be enough for two each. Ask the students to raise their card if they think the logic statement matches their card.

Swap the cards around AND increase the speed of your questions to make it more challenging.
