WHAT: Understand the opportunities computer networks offer for communication

SMART START:

Make a list of everything that you can think of that is connected to the Internet.

Extra Mile:

If the Internet disappeared tomorrow, what would happen?

HOW:

A computer network is more than one electronic device with the ability to connect and share resources.

Activity 1

Investigate how people communicated before the Internet was created.

Activity 2

List the additional methods for communications, now that we have the Internet.

Activity 3

How has communication over computer networks improved society? Investigate.

Activity 4 - READ

Computer networks have given us new opportunities for global communication. In the past, if a UK business wanted to work closely with an Australian business then they needed to communicate via phone, post or by visiting each other in person. This was costly, slow and ineffective. Now, it is only the time difference that hinders communication.

  • Grandparents move from the UK to Spain in order to retire in a warm country.
  • Two best friends are separated when one moves to Scotland whilst the other stays in Cornwall.
  • A business wants to expand across Europe.

Once you have chosen your scenario, create two images:

  • Image 1 will show that scenario before the Internet
  • Image 2 will show that scenario after the Internet

Optional Extra:

  • What advice can you give the people in your scenario about staying safe whilst communicating online?
