WHAT: Understand the opportunities computer networks offer for collaboration

SMART Start:

Define the word "collaborate" in five words.

Extra Mile:

Evaluate your use of collaboration in school. How could you become better at this?

HOW:

NOTE: G-Suite is required for this outcome if you want to collaborate over a network (teachers see bottom of page).

Activity 1 - READ

Before we begin I need you to remember all of the things that we have learnt so far about protecting yourself online. The same rules apply when collaborating online with others. When you work with another person online, they are your colleague. You must treat your colleagues with respect. You must also ensure that what you create is protected and private. This will stop others taking credit for your hard work. If you have forgotten the principals of staying safe online then please revisit outcomes 7_1_1 to 7_1_7.

Activity 2

Write a code of conduct for online collaboration.

Activity 4

Sign into your G-Suite account and visit your drive. Once you are signed in you can access the drive by typing drive.google.com into the address bar. Alternatively you can click on the grid of 9 squares icon in the top right-hand corner and choose Drive.

Look at this guide to find out about Google Drive and learn some basics.

Activity 5

Use trial and error to figure out how Google Sheets, Docs and Slides work. There are plenty of online tutorials if you are finding this tricky.

Activity 6

Once you are comfortable with the drive you need to find a partner to work with. Find out their email address and share a document with them. Practice getting it to work and making a document together. This feels a bit strange at first but you will soon get used to it!

CHECK:

EMBED:

Try to make a Google Quiz and send it to some people to fill in. You can find out the basics from this helpsheet.

CLASSROOM IDEAS:

To make this outcome successful we recommend that you use G-Suite for Education within your school setting. You can find out about this here: https://edu.google.co.uk/products/productivity-tools/

Using G-Suite means that you can give your students access to G-Suite in a protected environment that can be monitored by school staff. If students were to simply create their own personal accounts for school use then this could be open to safeguarding issues.
