WHAT IS CALFRESH FOOD?

CalFresh Food (known federally as Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program or SNAP) helps people with limited income to buy healthy food.
CalFresh Food is a nutrition program not a welfare program.
CalFresh Food benefits are deposited in an Electronic Benefit Transfer (EBT) card. It works just like a bank debit card. EBT cards can be used at most grocery stores and farmers’ markets

WHO CAN GET CALFRESH FOOD?

The amount of CalFresh Food a household receives is dependent on household size, countable income, and monthly expenses, such as housing and utilities.
You may be eligible to receive CalFresh Food even if you have earnings, are unemployed, retired, receiving Social Security Income (SSI), or other benefit programs such as CalWORKs or General Assistance.
To qualify, at least one household member must be an eligible immigrant or citizen. That person can be a child.
Single individuals and couples without children may be eligible to receive CalFresh Food.
College students may be eligible to get CalFresh Food if they meet student requirements and are otherwise eligible.
If you get SSI (Supplemental Security Income) you may qualify for CalFresh Food, if otherwise eligible.

WHAT ELSE SHOULD YOU KNOW ABOUT CALFRESH FOOD?

You can own your home and car, and have savings and still be eligible. You do not need to report CalFresh Food on your tax return.
CalFresh Food is not a loan. You do not need to pay back benefits that you receive, unless you are overpaid.
If you are 60 years of age or older, homeless or disabled, you are eligible to purchase prepared meals at certified restaurants in Santa Clara County.
