UL 1995 Preview
New Club, New Parks, New Divisions
The United League opens its 45th season today with a new franchise, two new ballparks, and a divisional realignment. For the first time since 1955, the Bay Area will be without top-flight baseball, as Minneapolis adopts the troubled franchise. The rechristened Minneapolis Foxes will play and the brand-new Pronto Pup Stadium and compete in an adjusted West Division that now includes Midwest rivals Detroit and Cleveland, who swap places with Florida and Havana, who were moved to the East Division.
The Cleveland Barons enter a new era in a brand-new retro ballpark, Johnny Podres Field, a faithful recreation of the old League Park on the east side of Cleveland, complete with its towering fence in right field. The Barons have updated their logo and upgraded their roster, adding Hall of Fame-caliber players at catcher at shortstop in a bid to end 21-year playoff and 11-year winning-season droughts. GM Charlie Qualls shelled out $10.3 million to net catcher Rich Gedman, a seven-time Gold Glove and seven-time All-Star. At age 34, Gedman is the top-ranked backstopper in the circuit and becomes the highest paid since Joe Torre. The Barons also added SS Robin Yount for $6.2 million. Yount, 38, is a 14-time All-Star entering his 22nd season. The longtime Chicago Colt fixture became the fourth member of the 3,000 hit club last July in his one season with Brooklyn. Yount fractured his thumb in spring training and will miss the first month of the season.
The Atlanta Hilltoppers, fresh off a club record 110-win season, enter the season as prohibitive favorites to capture their second straight President's Trophy, with hopes to amend for their premature ejection from the playoffs last fall. The Toppers will face stiff competition in the West, however, as Los Angeles and Chicago are rated among the league's elite, and newcomers Cleveland and Detroit look competitive.
The East looks more wide open, but the Toronto Polar Bears look like the team to beat. A perennial powerhouse offense, the P-Bears have improved their pitching, with rookie righthander Mike Grace, the 18th overall pick, slated to back up Dwight Gooden at the top of the rotation. Other rookies set to make their UL debuts on Opening Day included Denver righthander Hideo Nomo (#1 overall), Manhattan southpaw Andy Pettitte (#4 overall), and Washington first baseman Jason Giambi (#6 overall).
The Keystone Starlings have the best chance to break into the playoff field. GM Doug Aiton, who has settled into his four-bedroom apartment in the cupola of New Shibe Park, improved his club by 23 games in 1994, missing the Hex by two games. The Philly-based club added some big-name veterans this offseason, including C Mike Stanley and Mickey Tettleton, CF Kirby Puckett, and 1B Fred McGriff.
The most vulnerable of last year's playoff teams are the Detroit Griffins, who lost their starting second baseman and their ace closer for three months and find themselves surrounded by new West Division foe; and the St. Louis Maroons, whose run of 12 straight playoff appearances is jeopardized by the injury to ace Joe Magrane, who will miss the first half of the season.
The triennial Founder's Cup makes it return in 1995. The eight-game midseason tournament will head to Seattle in early July to be played indoors for the first time. Los Angeles won the tournament for the first time in 1992, in its return after a two-decade hiatus. The Cup will be followed by the 32nd All-Star Game, staged at Toronto's Ed Werenich Stadium for the first time. The West will look to extend its five-game winning streak in the Midsummer Classic.
The UL Is Now Secure!
UL Special Liaison Lance Mueller Announces New Partnership!
By Sean “He’s the same guy as the Griffins GM!” Holloway, UL Beat Reporter
As we just witnessed at ATL GM Chaney’s presser, there appear to be some new sheriffs in town, in the guise of these guys (ha!) wearing LFG Limited shirts. Before the initial confusion of how Chaney’s presser ended could wear off, UL Special Liaison Lance Mueller hurried reporters into conference room R, past the food court and turn right at the barber shop, (goddamn, is this UL HQ big!) for a presser about the new deal.
Stated Mueller: “As the world changes, the UL does not – except in regard to keeping players, and fans, safe. And it was clear from the sightings of this crazy fox and subsequent attack on UL Beat Reporter Sean ‘Steady On’ Holloway that the UL had to take preventive measures. We cannot have a fox running around and knee-capping people. This will not do. As such, the UL is proud to announce that it has just signed a security deal with MTL GM Bryan Gryka’s LFG Limited. LFG specializes in protection services, and we at the UL firmly believe that having their staff stationed at critical points throughout the UL’s wide array of stadiums, practice facilities, and related buildings such as the [sprawling, multimillion dollar—ed. note] UL HQ, will only enhance safety. LFG specializes in working closely with local law enforcement and security companies.”
Although it appeared that Mueller had more to say, he was interrupted by Gryka screaming “Let’s fucking go!”, so Mueller relinquished the podium to Gryka for his remarks. Unfortunately, by the time Mueller had done that, Gryka had already grown tired of waiting and had left out the rear entrance, so Mueller returned to finish his comments.
Continued Mueller: “Don’t forget that to celebrate the new partnership, the Commish’s wife and bored chick on the couch, who you may remember is in charge of all UL souvenirs and marketing efforts, will be selling a variety of t-shirts. Here to show them off are 1994 Cy Young Pedro Martinez, ROY Jimmy Edmonds, and MVP Barry Bonds.”
With that, out strolled the crew, all wearing joint LFG-UL merch. Each shirt had a UL badge on the front with different LFG slogans on the back. Pedro’s stated “LFG - Harassment is our business!”. Edmonds’ read “LFG – your bother is our bother, so don’t bother!”. And Bonds’ opined “LFG - If you need someone to go, let’s fucking go!”.
I have to say that the T-shirts, while initially a bit off-putting, have already grown on me. The Montserrat font gives a really clean look, while with the Shrikhand, you have a bold retro style. And I feel safer already to boot knowing that Gryka’s goons, er men, are on the scene! Ohhhhh, but I do hope that they have a longer attention span than their company founder. If not, there could be more wackiness from that darn fox in store for the rest of the UL.
If you’d like to check out Gryka’s goons, er men, in action before the season starts, there is a fantastic triple bill at the adult theater right near UL HQ. We start with “Pappas Takes a Pummeling”, cruise into “Not Quite Done Yet with Snagglepuss” and then jump into Dickie Thon’s latest “Goes in Any Hole”. LFG is also in charge of security for this world premiere of Thon’s latest.
That Darn Fox!
Wily Fox Wreaking Havoc in FA!
By Sean “He’s the same guy as the Griffins GM!” Holloway, UL Beat Reporter
Free Agency was just off the chain this year, thanks to an uninvited canine making the rounds. What started out as a normal FA signing session at UL HQ devolved into mild chaos.
To start, KEY GM Dougie “Fresh” Aiton held a presser immediately after FA concluded. At the presser, Aiton, on stage with two podiums in Conference Room S, took questions from reporters about his unique approach to FA for 1995. Aiton reportedly wanted to address why KEY’s foray into the FA market did not end as expected this year.
Reporter #1: “What seemed to be the issue with KEY and FA this year? Was it a lack of preparation, or was it more strategic in nature?”
Aiton #1: “Well, that’s a great question. I think it was more strategic in nature. Mid-way through the session, we discovered that my genius strategy of bidding against myself misfired.”
Reporter #1: “Bidding against yourself? What the heck do you mean?”
Aiton #1: “I’ll let myself answer that question.”
Upon uttering these words, Aiton ran over to the other podium and Aiton #2 continued, in a less-thick Scottish brogue: “I’m glad you asked that question. In previous FA periods, KEY has often found itself outbid. We believe that comes from a tendency to underbid because our organization is inherently cheap. As such, by bidding against myself, I was able to have a redundancy in the system and thus have two shots at the guys I wanted. If my first bid was too low, there was a good chance that the second would be more competitive.”
Reporter #1: “What?”
Reporter #2: “That’s fine, but aren’t you upset that you may have lost out on guys by underbidding and seeing KEY sign them?”
Aiton #1 (after running back to the 1st podium, returning to his standard Scottish brogue): “Yes, we aren’t too happy at missing out on our targets, but that KEY guy is pretty savvy and caught us completely off-guard. Next year we will be ready for him!”
Reporter #1: “Are you totally deranged?”
Reporter #3: “So how would you evaluate your FA this year?”
Aiton #2 (after running back to the second podium and adopting a weakly-performed French accent): “We’re happy we were able to sign the guys we did. We knew we’d be in a bidding war with KEY, so our approach was to let it all hang out. We were able to re-stock the IF with Crime Dog, Velarde, Brown and Tettleton, and Puckett is a great addition to CF.”
As Aiton was becoming more unglued and continued running between podiums and mumbling to himself in various accents, a KEY staffer stepped up and clarified that they discovered that TWO sets of bids for the Starlings had been submitted. No one at KEY is quite sure how that happened, but KEY staff report seeing a large, red canine – most likely a fox – hanging around the drop box where UL GMs submit their bids. One source inside KEY even insisted that he saw the fox place an envelope with “KEY 1995 FA BIDS” into the drop box, and that this is the cause of the confusion. Security footage did capture what appears to be a large red fox that was loitering around the drop box around the submission deadline. [Subsequent analysis of the bids revealed a $1 million offer for "Hanging" Chad Curtis, offering further proof of malfeasance.]
As the madness with KEY continued, I left conference room T in UL HQ and wandered over to conference room U to hear the Detroit Griffins post-FA presser. GM Holloway, who’s rumored to have quit the sauce and partying, made two interesting signings at 1B in an apparent attempt to sign every player in FA that could play that position, starting with HoJo and then landing Griffin great Bob “Fat Boy” Horner.
On stage with Holloway was Griffins Special Assistant Lance Mueller, so I was expecting some sort of shenanigans as lately Mueller has not been needed to keep Holloway under control since Holloway had been surprisingly lucid. As Holloway approached the dais, the questions started.
Reporter #1: “Was it your intent to sign every 1B in FA? Wasn’t the plan to move Klesko to 1B and replace him with a true outfielder in left?”
Holloway: “Good question! We knew we needed some guys, but it wasn’t clear to me initially who to sign. After a night spent with Walker….”
Reporter #4: Walker, Expo and Rockie great?
Holloway: “No, Walker, Texas Ranger! God, I love that show! Chuck Norris is the man!”
Reporter #2: “But wait! Last year you traded for Walker, UL Player! Why didn’t you move Klesko to 1B and put Walker, UL Player, in LF?”
Holloway (looking nervous): “Uhhh……Walker had been on the DL for so long that I forgot I had him? No! Wait! Walker, Texas Ranger would never be on the DL! If anything, the DL would be on Chuck Norris!”
Upon hearing this response, the room erupted in shouts, screams and laughter. Despite the cacophony, another reporter managed to shout above the din “This is a horrible blunder, even for a GM with such a blunderous history as you. Doesn’t this move guarantee fiscal chaos and ruin DET’s chances to compete in 1995?”
Holloway, who was still at the podium despite Mueller’s best efforts to pull him away, opined on the outcome of his moves by offering that “The dildo of consequences rarely arrives lubed.”
And this caused utter and complete chaos in the room. Some laughed; some cried. Others claimed this was the most intellectually and philosophical statement ever made in the history of sports, and they claimed this quote would be studied for years, just like Eric Cantona’s quote at a press conference when he explained why he kicked a Palace fan.
With chaos still reigning in the conference room, Mueller managed to send Holloway to the backstage exit with several LFG security guards protecting the apparently hapless GM. As quiet slowly returned, Mueller explained that some guy in a fox costume had attacked Holloway with a police baton at Kiner Stadium. Holloway, who was in his office spending the night pouring over FA reports, suffered a concussion, and Mueller stated that it likely will take several months before Holloway is back to normal, but DET staff are hopeful since watching Walker, Texas Ranger, has some strange therapeutic effect on Holloway.
Mueller continued: “The attack happened before the UL’s new contract with LFG Limited, and for more specifics as to what measures the Griffins will introduce to protect the organization, LFG Limited’s CEO, Bryan Gryka, will now be available to answer your questions.”
As Gryka was walking to the podium, he grabbed an empty Coke can, screamed “Let’s fucking go!” and crushed it against his head. As he got closer to the podium, he grabbed a bottle of sparkling water, screamed “Let’s fucking go!” again, and reared his arm back to smash that against his head, despite Mueller’s warnings of “That’s a GLASS bottle!”. Gryka, unfazed, smashed the bottle over his head and promptly knocked himself out.
Mueller, as several LFG staff were dragging Gryka’s limp body out the back door, shouted “press conference over!” before retreating to the exit. As Mueller left, he did leave reporters with one piece of wisdom “if you see a fox, call the authorities; this canine should be considered armed and dangerous!”
Methinks that 1995 is going to be a year when it’s best that one always have their antennae up, or some strange “accident” may befall you.
