Earthquake in Eastern Turkey, occurred at 10h41 UTC (12h41 heure française)

Moment magnitude rapid estimates: 7.2 to 7.3 (EMSC, SCARDEC, USGS)

Focal depth varies between 10 and 23 km depending of the agency and method used, but updated values seem to indicate a depth around 20 km, that is rather deep. However, given the magnitude (7.2) the rupture may have reached the surface anyway.

The mechanism indicates reverse faulting essentially, with fault directions approximately E-W.

Le mécanisme indique un jeu de faille inverse essentiellement, avec des directions de faille à peu près E-W.

Underneath, the epicenter is reported on maps (IPGP and USGS) showing the North-Anatolian and East-Anatolian Faults. The earthquake is clearly located east of the North and East Anatolian Faults. It is located in the collision frontier region between the Arabic and Eurasian plates.
