Sachiko Nakajima is a musician, mathematics researcher, and STEAM educator. Fascinated by mathematics and music from an early age, she won gold and silver medals at the International Mathematical Olympiad. After graduating from the Department of Mathematics at the University of Tokyo, she pursued a career as a jazz pianist while engaging in interdisciplinary activities spanning mathematical research, education, art, and technology. In 2017, she founded steAm, Inc., dedicated to fostering creativity through STEAM education and creating opportunities for diverse individuals to collaborate and co-create. She later studied media art at New York University's Tisch School of the Arts. In 2025, she served as a Theme Producer for Expo 2025 Osaka, Kansai, Japan, leading the creation of the Signature Pavilion "Playground of Life: Jellyfish Pavilion" under the theme "Invigorating Lives." She currently serves as a Project Researcher at the Graduate School of Mathematical Sciences, the University of Tokyo; Visiting Professor at Kanazawa Institute of Technology; Specially Appointed Visiting Professor at the Research Institute for Humanity and Nature (RIHN); and Founder & CEO of steAm, Inc. Her mathematical research spans the intersection of mathematics and art, as well as more recent studies in probability theory, knot theory, and discrete mathematics.
In this talk, I will introduce two research projects from different areas of mathematics, along with some of my creative explorations at the intersection of mathematics and art.
First, I will discuss the relationship between Yang–Baxter maps, which arise in the theory of integrable systems, and the independence preserving property in probability theory. Focusing on the concept of ultra-discretization of probability distributions, I will explore unexpected connections between different mathematical structures.
Next, I will introduce our research on "Möbius Flowers," which investigates what happens when multiple Möbius strips are joined and cut along their centerlines. Depending on their configurations, the resulting heart-shaped loops may become interlocked or remain separated. Starting from a simple hands-on experiment, I will explain how this intriguing phenomenon can be understood and generalized through knot theory and combinatorial approaches.
Finally, I will share some examples of interactive simulation tools and media art projects that visualize mathematical structures and principles, allowing people to explore and experience mathematics in creative ways.
Throughout the talk, I will begin with basic concepts and concrete examples, highlighting the joy of mathematical discovery and the possibilities that emerge when mathematics connects with other disciplines and artistic expression.
Fascinated by both mathematics and music from an early age, and more recently by the exciting possibilities of technology, engineering, and hands-on making, I have pursued an interdisciplinary journey across mathematical research, jazz piano, media art, and STEAM education. In this talk, I will reflect on my personal journey and share the joy, discoveries, and possibilities I have encountered while moving between mathematics, science, art, and other fields.
In particular, I will explore gender gaps and challenges related to diversity in mathematics, science, and technology. Drawing on statistical data and international comparisons, as well as my own experiences in educational settings and international collaborations, I will discuss the current situation in Japan and around the world. How do social and cultural expectations, unconscious biases, and educational environments influence people's interests and confidence in mathematics, science, and engineering, as well as their educational choices and careers in research?
Furthermore, how can interdisciplinary STEAM education and creative practices help us move beyond conventional boundaries and stereotypes, opening up new possibilities for diverse individuals? What kinds of spaces, environments, systems, and social structures are needed to realize the "Democratization of Creativity" — a society in which everyone has the opportunity to discover, express, and develop their own unique and diverse creative potential?
I hope to explore these questions openly and candidly together with the participants. During the talk, I also plan to use Mentimeter for real-time interactive polls and questions, with the option of anonymous responses, to encourage participation and reflection.
