I was always interested in teaching younger kids and having the role as a teaching assistant. Therefore, I was eager to sign up for the Wells Summer Fun Teaching Assistant Internship this summer break. As I would be staying in Thailand for the majority of my summer break, I thought it would be suitable for my schedule too. The purpose of this CAS Project was to gain the skill to teach younger students, support them with academics and activities, and help and assist the teachers. As I have been in international school for 8 years and have the experience of living abroad, I thought I could help students experiencing American curriculum studies and support students who are learning English as their second language. I believed that I could learn the value of teaching younger students gain the skill as an educator by this experience.
Before the summer break starts, I made a CV to showcase my experiences and submitted the application form. Then I got approval from my school CAS coordinator and got emails from the primary school principal. I read the document for instructions for teaching assistant multiple times and understood the rules. Next, I had a meeting Grade 1 teacher I will be working with and talked briefly about the plans of summer school. Through this meeting, I got to know my roles of this experience which is to help Grade 1 and 2 students with their English and Math skills. To prepare for my roles, I have watched some videos helping kids learn English and Math and tried searching for the English and Math questions that are appropriate for Grade 1 and 2 student levels.
I came to school every Monday to Friday for 4 weeks from 9:00 AM to 2:30 PM. During the first week of internship, I read fairy tales for the students in the morning and helped them when they have difficulties in doing the reading and writing worksheets. I usually helped the students with sentence structure and grammar when doing the writing works. In the afternoon, I taught students math including basic addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. From the third week, I also practiced printing out the study materials and organizing the worksheets. Aside from the class time, I stayed with the students during break, lunch, and after school and communicated with them.
During lunch time, there were arguments between students as students from Grade 1 to 5 had to share the same room and class toys. There were conflicts in keeping the noises and equal sharing of toys. To resolve these issues, I made rules with the students for class management. For examples, 'No screaming' and 'No hitting/pushing each other' were the new rules added. I warned students when they do not follow the rules and mess around. Also, I tried to communicate with students to share the class toys equally as there were many arguments between groups from taking too much class toys. Moreover, during the last week of school, there were many changes as the new teacher came to take care of the class. I worked closely with the new teacher to adjust the new schedule and lesson plans.
Through this CAS experience, I could understand and learn deeply about the roles of teachers. By teaching students, I could realize that sharing knowledge and helping others with academics is valuable. As the students I worked with were young primary students, I had to communicate in their level and find out the best ways to help them understand the concepts. Therefore, I could develop the skills to understand others in their perspectives and teach them in an effective way.
Coming to school every week day during summer vacation was not easy but I don't regret my decision as it was meaningful and I had fun. I could be productive by waking up in the early morning and doing exercise in the afternoon.
The pictures and photo drive above demonstrate the experience of my internship. After my summer school internship, I could briefly share my experience to the teachers and IB coordinator. I shared that the experience I had from the internship is valuable and I enjoyed spending time with primary students. I could learn more about the teaching roles and how to help students who are not fluent in English. Furthermore, I've been demonstrating the skills I've gained from summer school internship in many primary-collaborative activities. I could interat with primary students better during the 'Pinktober Music Festival' and Primary Sports Day. I'm really grateful for this opportunity as it has allowed me to gain new skills in life and could move one step forward to my career experiences.
