Kimiko is a disciplined and hardworking individual. Due to her isolated upbringing she isn’t very good around people or particularly trusting. Initially she can come across as quiet and perhaps a little cold - but in truth Kimiko has a good heart and level headed nature. She’d go to any lengths to protect her home, Sanctuary, her people and her crew. She spends most of her time training, burying her head in magical texts and books to become stronger. Since traveling with the Strawhats she’s a bit more open and not as quiet.

Kimiko utilizes a mixture of magical weapons and spells to fight. The first and oldest is her magical focus (a blue glowing crystal attached to a golden chain) - she uses it to cast magical spells and act like a whip weapon in battle. The second she acquires during her two years of training, before meeting back up with Luffy & the others. Arcane rings (they appear like loose bracelets on her arm, but move up her arm and stay there when she uses arcane magic- similar to the Ten Rings in Shang-Chi). Kimiko can also draw runes for spells she needs. Even later on gaining an elemental brooch of her mother's that allows her to manipulate the four elements (Fire, Water, Earth and Air).
Kimiko doesn’t know she’s half cosmic dragon and in possession of the golden flame. An ancient and powerful magic passed down through generations. It fell to Kimiko when she was born and has lain dormant within her ever since.
Ryu, her adopted brother, is a small dragon. The two met when they were young and have been inseparable ever since. Ryu even joined the Strawhats too.
Kimiko can use all three forms of Haki - Observation, Armament and Conqueror's. The latter of which she unlocks in combat on Onigashima in Wano. Her conqueror's haki is uniquely gold as it draws from the power of the golden flame.
Kimiko is one of the top fighters of the crew, alongside Luffy, Zoro, Sanji and Jinbei.
Hakuryu Kimiko/”Kimiko” is the sorceress of the Strawhat pirates and the seventh crew-mate that Luffy recruited. She is the daughter of the sorcerer, Hiroko and cosmic dragon, Himiko. Kimiko dreams of one day being the most powerful sorceress in the world.
CHILDHOOD
Kimiko was born on the seas of the New World, to her mother, Himiko and her father, Hiroto. The two were a part of a crew determined to rescue and guide magical creature refugees back to the safety of Sanctuary (an island of magical creatures located on the Grand Line). Due to the nature of their life and Kimiko being half-cosmic dragon, it became clear that she wouldn't be safe sailing with them. So the decision was made to head back to Sanctuary.
Once at Sanctuary, Kimiko was left with her father, Hiroto and Sanctuary's guardian, the great dragon, Haku. Himiko returned to sea with her brother, Yoru. As heartbreaking as it was to part, Himiko knew there were still many more magical creatures that needed to be saved and guided back to Sanctuary. She also knew it was the only way to keep sorcerer pirate and notorious poacher, Kaito, away from Sanctuary and away from her daughter. The further away they drew his attention from Sanctuary the better. So Himiko said goodbye to her young daughter and departed.
Kimiko grew up unaware of her heritage, believing she was just human. She lived a relatively happy childhood for the first eight years of her life, spending time with her father, guardian Haku and adopted brother Ryu. A small dragon Kimiko rescued from the sea when she was three. From that moment on, the two vowed to always be there for each other, vowing to be family.
It was at the age of eight, when on a trip to a nearby island with her father, Hiroto, that Kimiko first met the very man that would forever change her life. That man being Kaito, the very sorcerer her people have been taught to fear and hide from. When she becomes separated from her father on their trip after an encounter with bullying children, Kimiko crosses paths with Kaito. Kaito, lying about his identity, manages to earn some trust from Kimiko - appearing as a kind stranger. The two bond over Kimiko not fitting in with the other children, him relating that he never really fit in either. Kaito showcases some magic to her and almost has her give up information on Sanctuary. But it's only when Kimiko realizes what she almost gives up, remembering her promise to Haku, that she goes back on it. Kaito tries to gently press her, but Kimiko apologizes, running off to find her father.
Meeting back up with her father, Hiroto, Kimiko informs him of her meeting with Kaito. Hiroto realizing who he is from description alone, grabs Kimiko demanding what she told him - did she reveal the entrance? Kimiko shakes her head, but said she let the name slip. Shaken, Hiroto grabs her and flees. On their small ship sailing back, the two are ambushed by Kaito. Knowing what comes next, Hiroto casts a powerful concealment spell - hiding Kimiko on a small piece of driftwood from their now destroyed ship. All she can do is watch silently in terror as Kaito brutally tortures her father, Hiroto, to death for information on Sanctuary. Due to Hiroto's spell, Kaito never finds Kimiko - eventually leaving in anger over another failed attempt at finding the magical island.
Pulling her father's body onto her driftwood, Kimiko makes for Sanctuary very much in denial and in vain hope that Haku can save him. Upon arrival, Kimiko learns from Haku that it is too late - Hiroto is dead. Grief stricken, Kimiko becomes angry - wanting him back, not being able to live with her guilt that Kaito killed him because of her carelessness. Haku comforts her in her grief but also swears her to secrecy, no-one can know it was Kaito - if they did it would cause mass panic that he had come so close to the island. Eventually Kimiko agrees, keeping it a secret from all on the island, even her brother, Ryu.
This death drives Kimiko to train in magic, vowing to her father that she'll become the most powerful sorceress so no-one will ever be a threat to Sanctuary or her loved ones ever again. A vow that she will become stronger so she can protect them all.
MEETING THE STRAWHATS
Kimiko meets the Strawhats when they discover a small crack in the concealment spell that covers Sanctuary. A spell that has held for decades, hiding the magical island from view and trespassers not granted access. However due to the duration of the spell it requires upkeep. Unfortunately a small crack goes unreported that results in the Strawhat crew slipping through and discovering Sanctuary.
Initially on their arrival, Kimiko is the only one who approaches them. Declaring them trespassers she demands they leave, threatening a fight. Luffy being Luffy, refuses - especially as the crew are curious about this mysterious Island. A fight breaks out between her and Luffy, and the crew are surprised by her magic - having never seen anything like it. Whilst her attacks seem to fend off Luffy, it becomes clear it's more a match of skill against strength. Surprisingly the fight is brought to a stop by a commanding voice, a voice belonging to Sanctuary's elder and guardian, Haku. Kimiko is shocked as Haku declares the crew to come inside the Island, wishing to know more about the pirates who found their island.
The Strawhat crew are shocked to learn of the magical inhabitants on the island. Inhabitants that are nervous and on edge at Haku's strange command, all of them terrified of the pirates. But none questioned his command, except for Kimiko. Kimiko is horrified and angered that Haku would willingly let humans, especially pirates, on their sacred island. However Haku doesn't seem to share this anger, caution yes but no anger or disgust. Truthfully he senses something within Luffy that doesn't cause him alarm, instead querying about his hat. Luffy of course is protective of his beloved hat, wondering why Haku is so interested in it. It is revealed that Haku knows of Shanks, telling Luffy that he came to the aid of the people in this place. If he trusted Luffy with his hat then Haku at least has faith that he means no harm to their island. Kimiko of course continues to question that faith, being hostile to all the Strawhats. Luffy in particular faces the forefront of her hostility, especially as he follows her around asking about her magic. He even asks her to join his crew during this time, a request that Kimiko refuses (at least initially).
JOINING THE STRAWHATS
Trouble soon seems to arise around Sanctuary, as one of the island's inhabitant dragons runs into some poachers on the outskirts of Sanctuary. Hearing of the incident, Kimiko along with Ryu rushes out to the border. Much to Kimiko’s annoyance, Luffy follows after them. It’s there that Kimiko witnesses Luffy’s true nature, as he protects Kimiko’s brother, Ryu from poachers. This is at the detriment of himself as Luffy is knocked into the water. Kimiko comes to his aid, pulling him out of the depths. When Kimiko questions why he would do that, Luffy simply replies “because we’re friends”.
This leads Kimiko to reevaluate the man before her. This continues as Luffy and the Strawhats stand beside Kimiko at Sanctuary to help defend her home from rather formidable poachers who have managed to slip through the crack in the border’s camouflage. Kimiko is indebted to the Strawhats for fighting for her home, and finally allows herself the chance to actually trust them.
Through talking with them and Luffy, Kimiko reflects on her own desires to set off to the sea. But she still feels responsible to remain, Sanctuary needs to be protected. Haku senses this, pulling her to one side. He reminds her of her dream to be the most powerful sorceress, and that she has learnt everything she can from this island. It’s time for her to be set free and follow her dream. Haku adds that he was protecting Sanctuary long before she came - he insists no matter where she goes she will always be a protector of Sanctuary. Finally convinced, Kimiko asks if Luffy’s offer is still open. The answer… yes. So Kimiko waves goodbye to her home, becoming the Sorceress of the Strawhat pirates alongside her brother, Ryu.
THE STRAW-HAT CREW
Kimiko becomes an invaluable member of the Strawhat Crew. Providing magical insight and strong fighting capabilities. She earns herself a bounty of 70.000,000 berries after aiding her crew in the rescue of Robin from Enies Lobby.
Kimiko continues traveling with them all the way up until Sabaody Archipelago where she is separated from her crew by Kuma.
2 YEARS AWAY
Kimiko alongside her brother, Ryu ends up on the island of Eden. A small rural abandoned island in the middle of the Grandline. Here she meets sorceress Kiraya, who is the island's lone inhabitant. Here she does her two years of training, learning how to use the arcane rings and learning to combine Ryu’s dragon fire into her attacks. When the 2 years is up she and Ryu head to Sabaody Archipelago to reunite with their crew.
THE NEW WORLD
After 2 years, Kimiko and Ryu reunite with their beloved crew - heading off into the New World together. Here Kimiko get’s to show-off her new techniques and weaponry, as well as acquire some others - including discovering her mother’s elemental broach. Also after the incident at Dressrosa, Kimiko’s bounty increased to 270,000,000.
Kimiko doesn't split off to head to Wholecake, instead vowing to meet back up with Luffy, Nami, Chopper, Brook and Sanji in Wano. She spends much of her time in Wano, before Luffy's arrival and the raid, learning as much as she can about her mother's brooch. Kimiko is determined to learn how to reach elemental harmony, using all four elements at once. Heading to two shrines of the elemental dragons, one hidden and one in the ruins of Kuri, Kimiko reaches out. Here she gains a silver scale that allows her brother, Ryu, to grow in strength and size, and some surprising knowledge. Her mother was in Wano once, as Kimiko uses her old weapon some refer to her as the elemental wielder - a title her mother once held.
In the raid on Onigashima, Kimiko stands with Luffy and Zoro against Kaido - managing to hold her own to some degree against the Emperor. She leaves along with Zoro when Luffy vows to beat him. It's at this point she showcases her true power after one of Kaido's top officers injures her brother, Ryu. Leading to her unleashing an all-out attack with all four elements and her now awakened Conqueror's Haki - which is gold. The attack causes her eyes to turn gold too and the brief outline of dragons wings on her back to appear in the gold light. Whilst this is deemed a brief side effect of her magic/haki, the truth is the golden flame is no longer dormant and Kimiko is beginning to access it's power.
THE COSMIC DRAGONS (Warning potentail manga spoilers!)
A few weeks after the incident that changed the world on Egghead, the Strawhats come across something that would shake Kimiko and Ryu to their core.
The area of ocean they are sailing through has been hit by curse magic, a dangerous and forbidden magic that acts both chaotically and fatally - appearing like a black corrosion that leaks into the water turning it a murky gray. Kimiko and Ryu are deeply unsettled by this, even to the point that the usual brave Kimiko seems terrified. It seems a ship has been attacked, with the black corroded (almost stone) bodies of different magical beings seen alongside the drift wood.
On the outskirts of the chaos they find a man drifting unconscious. Luckily he seems unaffected by the curse magic as the crew bring him onboard. Immediately Kimiko is drawn to the man, something about him appearing... familiar. Yet she can't figure out why... It is when Brook and Usopp discover a memory crystal (a crystal that can capture still or video images of treasured memories - Kimiko has one of her crewmates). The memory within is of a woman with a striking resemblance to Kimiko - she is sat on an island beach in the moonlight singing a lullaby. A lullaby of the dragons, a lullaby Kimiko knows well.... The woman in Hakuryu Himiko... her mother. Then the man... it's too blurry for her, she doesn't remember. Insisting Chopper wake him, Kimiko is determined to find out his identity. The man wakes, takes one look at Kimiko and calls her name... Kiko... only her family call her that. This man is her uncle, Hakuryu Yoru.
Once awake and on board, Yoru explains to the Strawhats that his ship was attacked. He also isn't surprised the Kimiko doesn't remember him that well, the last he saw her she was still very young. And well, still unknown to Kimiko, information about her family was restricted - a means to protect her. Kimiko of course asks about her mother, unfortunately she passed.. protecting her people. However once alone, or at least when Kimiko and Ryu aren't present, Yoru spills the truth to majority of the rest of the crew. That truth is about Kimiko and her heritage, that she is half cosmic dragon and that she is in possession of the golden flame. He also mentions that Kaito knows it's awaken and is searching for it, he doesn't know about Kimiko, yet Yoru was seeking to protect her. Kaito is the one that attacked their ship, he is also responsible for killing Kimiko's mother, Himiko. Yoru plans to fight Kaito alone, allowing the Strawhats and the remainder of his crew (who the Strawhats have found at this point, along with their broken ship - that is tied to the Sunny whilst repairs are made) a chance to escape. The last part Kimiko overhears.
Knowing what Kaito is capable of, Kimiko becomes afraid and understands what she feels she has to do. Heading for her room, she gears up with her weapons. Whilst there she runs into Ryu, Kimiko reveals the truth about Kaito. That he murdered their father, Hiroto and the recent truth she learnt that Himiko is dead because of him too. Kimiko plans to take Yoru's place, holding off Kaito so they can all escape. Ryu tries to stop her, but Kimiko seals him into an arcane prison. From there Kimiko takes Nami's waver and casts an arcane shield around the Sunny, the crew can only watch as she disappears into the night, tears streaming down her face.
Eventually the crew catches up to her, on an outcrop of rock in the ocean. Luffy approaches her, leading to a conversation between captain and crew-mate. Truthfully he knows this isn't what she wants, knowing deep down she wants help but doesn't know how to ask for it. That Kimiko is acting in fear. Kimiko argues, knowing her sacrifice is the only way to protect her crew. This is different, Kaito isn't a warlord or an emperor - curse magic isn't something to be playing around with. He presents an even bigger danger to her crew-mates, this is the only way they can survive - at least in her eyes. The argument leads to a fight between them, one where Luffy holds back - refusing to fight. The fight concludes with Kimiko blocking herself off from the crew using water elemental magic and escapes. Luffy vows to her that he'll help her when she asks - if she calls out he'll hear her.
Kimiko faces Kaito alone, as predicted it doesn't go well. Luckily he doesn't find out the truth about her, about her possessing the flame - believing Yoru to have it. Locking her in chains, he prepares to kill her. It's then that Kimiko spots a ship in the distance... the Sunny. Swallowing her fear, Kimiko speaks her truth - she doesn't want to do this alone, she needs her crew. This sparks Luffy and the others to step into action to help Kimiko. As the battle rages, Kaito unleashes a potentially fatal attack of cursed spears - each aimed for one of her crew. Using her wind magic to redirect, the spears find a new target... Kimiko herself. The thin spears all strike her through the chest, a fatal blow. Uttering an apology to her crew, they can only watch in horror as she sinks into the ocean to her death.
The spears do indeed kill Kimiko, all she hears as she dies is the call of her crew-mates. Yet it doesn't last, as they believe they've lost her for good, the golden flame awakens. Emerging from the ocean, Kimiko sports her true form - golden dragon wings, sharp teeth, claw like nails, a golden tail, curled horns and golden eyes. Alongside Luffy, Kimiko uses her new power to fight Kaito together. Yet she soon loses control, unleashing her fury - a clash between her magic and Kaito's opens a portal to the abyss. A place between the living and the dead that is permanent darkness and silence. Kaito falls into it and is cursed to fate worse than death. Realizing what she's done, Kimiko uses her powers to close it. It succeeds but the unleashing of that power, causes her to explode and a tornado of golden flames spinning around her. She's lost control and if it continues she'll kill herself and her crew. Luffy manages to break through the flames, allowing Ryu through and the crew to call out to her. Their calls, Ryu's voice and him showing her the image on her treasured memory crystal - the image being of her crew-mates. It pulls her out, Kimiko returns to normal - collapsing unconscious.
She remains that way for days. Whilst the golden flame's abilities have healed the internal wounds, the eternal wound to her chest is still bad - combined with the new magic she used, well it takes a huge toll on her body. Remaining asleep for days, when Kimiko awakes she apologizes to her crew, begging Luffy to take her back. He agrees and they forgive her, but Kimiko still feels that guilt. Yoru departs with his new fixed ship and crew- but before he does he reveals everything to Kimiko - their legacy, the golden flame and that she is half cosmic dragon. He also reveals that she is considered royalty among dragons & all magical kind, additionally revealing their family name - Hakuryu. The crew is shocked. The Hakuryu's are a mystery, but they are considered enemies to the World Government and allies to the Revolutionary Army. Yoru confirms this, he knows Dragon and the two have aided each other in the past. Yoru has freed many of his people from slavery thanks to Dragon, and in return Yoru has aided him where he can.
With those revelations he parts, offering Kimiko her mother's books and the memory crystal of her mother's lullaby. He hopes the books will help Kimiko in learning about her new power. The Straw-hats have now gained a new ally and a possible new territory in the Isle of the Dragons - the hidden homeland of Dragons, of Kimiko's kind. After Yoru's departure, Kimiko grapples with her new power (a power that scares her) and her recovery after her fatal injury.
Kimiko lurches in the shadows, along with brother Ryu as a vigilante for all magical kinds. She protects them from poachers and isn’t above breaking the law to do what she has to. Along with her brother, Kimiko runs an underground shelter for magical creatures.
