Records Tumble in Excellent Year for Break Out Women!

23/10/2018 - It's been a record-breaking year for Leicestershire Scout's women paddlers in canoe slalom. The season finished for most of us last weekend with a competition at Stone in Staffordshire - the home of Olympic champion Joe Clarke. Katherine won the Division 3 K1 competition, and Zara the C1 competition - with a spectacular run that was 12 seconds faster than anybody in the K1 race! Lydia took 2nd place behind Zara and in the men's competition, Ethan won the junior K1 prize.

Between them our women have won 13 races, and been runners-up in another 13 during 2018. As a result we now have five K1 and two C1 women in Division 2 of the national league. A clear record, having never had more than one woman in Division 2 before now!

So, a huge 'well done' to all of our nationally ranked women canoe slalom paddlers: Molly, Kerry, Zara, Emma, Lydia, Elsa and Katherine. We can't wait to see what 2019 brings!

National Inter-Club Canoe Slalom Championships

09/09/2018 - Last weekend we attended the National Inter-Club Championships at the Cardington artificial slalom course in Priory Park near Bedford. Our A team achieved a magnificent 6th place, our B team came 17th, and our club was awarded the Sportsmanship prize!

With around 200 paddlers and their supporters the venue was very busy. Sixteen clubs from across the country were represented.

We also won the following individual prizes:

  • Highest placed J14 C1: Zara Montgomery
  • Highest placed J12 in the Prem race: Elsa Montgomery
  • 2nd Men's Team: Jamie Christie, Aaron Kirk and Ollie Row
  • 2nd Division 3 K1: Zara Montgomery
  • 3rd Division 3 K1: Emma Christie
  • 2nd C1: Patrick Marriott

Oughtibridge Slalom

18/04/2018 - There were many strong performances from club members at the first Division 3/4 canoe slalom competition at Oughtbridge last Saturday. Emma won the Division 3 Women's K1 event, with Zara coming fourth, achieving promotion-qualifying points, and taking the Junior prize. Luke was our highest placed man in Division 3 K1, with a fourth place. And Kerry was second in the Women's C1, with a performance that gave her maximum points. We were also awarded the Junior prize in C2 (Luke and Jacob) and our women beat the men to come second in the team event. Callum was our fastest paddler down the course, and came second in the Officials event. Well done everybody! The rock caught several of us out. Special mentions to Mark Montgomery, who managed to perch on the rock for several minutes, and to Chris Blythe who got rather wet on his second run trying to avoid it.

The high water and good weather combined with a little mud, made for a memorable competition. Thanks to all the adults for their support on and off the water, and with transport.
