Meet the Team

Break Out Canoe Club is run by a team of volunteer members of the Scout Association. Our coaches and assistant coaches all hold recognised British Canoeing qualifications, and can demonstrate a wide range of experience and knowledge in both recreational and competitive canoeing.

Chairperson - Richard Kelly

Head Coach - John Stoner

John is a Level 3 BCU coach and has been paddling for more than forty years. His main canoeing interest is canoe slalom - he has been competing on and off since 1978, and is just about hanging on in Division 2 of the national league. He has paddled in Scotland, California, The Alps, The Pyrenees and New Zealand. He is currently British Canoeing's representative for the East Midlands region, and a Scout county canoe assessor. In his spare time John works as an IT project manager for WS Atkins plc.

Treasurer - Giles Hill

Giles' son started canoeing with Break Out CC in 2015 and like a lot of parents of Break Out CC members gives up what spare time he can to help in whatever way possible. Being particularly frugal in nature with a keen eye for detail the Treasury position seemed quite apt and Giles has been keeping a tight hold of the purse strings since 2016!

Senior Coach - Johnathan Knifton

Johnathan is a Level 2 BCU coach specialising in open canoeing, bellboating and stand-up paddle boarding.

Wild Water Racing Coach - Jamie Christie

Membership Secretary - Jenny Row

Fundraising Secretary - Jo Gutteridge

Jo has been involved in scouting since 2001, serving as Group Committee member and Treasurer for a local scout group. Jo became Secretary to the Break Out Canoe Club after both her sons had enjoyed canoeing activities organised by the club. She has since moved on to the Treasurer role, and became a UKCC Level 1 coach in 2011. Although a relative beginner, Jo now canoes regularly with the club (but not on white water just yet!).

Assistant Coach - John Jackson

John has paddled with Break Out Canoe Club since its creation in 2005, when he attended our first course alongside Mark Stoner. He was president of the Nottingham Trent University canoe club, and has recently re-joined us as a regular coach

Assistant Coach - Mark Stoner

Mark has paddled with Break Out Canoe Club since its creation in 2005, when he attended our first course. He was Safety Officer at York University Canoe Club and holds the whitewater safety and rescue certificate. He has paddled in Nepal, France, Austria, Slovenia and the USA. He is now a Level 1 BCU coach and competes in Division 1 of the national canoe slalom league. Other canoeing interests include whitewater touring and canoe polo.

Assistant Coach - Chris Row
